To teach and supervise the undergraduate laboratories; to train and manage the teaching assistants for the introductory biology laboratory courses; to perform technical and administrative duties in support of Undergraduate laboratory instruction; to design, test and evaluate laboratory exercises; to plan, schedule and supervise preparation of experimental laboratories; to train and supervise Staff and Student Aides; to maintain laboratory equipment and facilities; to perform related duties as needs arise. 1. To plan, schedule, teach and manage instructional laboratory courses
*Determine laboratory requirements for each semester
*Develop exercises to coordinate with lecture material and competing demands upon equipment
*Prepare written materials in the absence of, or as supplement to, a published manual
*Prepare the final exam, quizzes, lab briefing and grading materials; distribute these materials to the Teaching Assistants (TAs) for the courses
*Test and evaluate proposed experiments for inclusion in curriculum
*Revise protocols when necessary
*Review processes and procedures
*Provide technical expertise
*Review results of experiments and make changes in experimental design as needed to improve laboratory exercises
2. Coordinate grading and monitors the performance of TAs and students
*Implements weekly training and instruction of teaching assistants in teaching responsibilities
*Oversee grading and recordkeeping of each course, or the laboratory component of each course; tallies grades and reports them
*Complete performance appraisals for students and TAs
*Address complaints and resolved grading issues
*Deal with academic dishonesty issues
3. Supervise Staff and manage laboratory inventories and equipment in the Biological Sciences rooms in STEPS
*Oversee staff ordering and receipt of all necessary supplies for instruction
*Assess equipment needs and order accordingly
*Maintain budget for laboratory expenses and monitor expenditures
4. Support implementation of laboratories by training and supervising staff, TA and other aides in laboratory processes, equipment function and technical procedures, including those necessary to accomplish items below as appropriate
*Provide work assignments to staff and aides giving detailed instruction
*Assist in solving problems
*Monitor performance
*Approve wage and work study hours as needed
*Prepare and provide equipment, chemical solutions and organisms necessary for laboratory exercise
*Provide direction regarding proper disposal at conclusion of exercise
*Maintain culture collections
*Prepare appropriate media, transfer periodically, test for purity
*Maintain chemical inventor
*Maintain laboratory equipment-cleaning and minor repairs
*Clean microscopes
*Coordinate repairs with in-house or outside vendors
5. Assume responsibility for safety issues in the courses assigned and oversee safety in Biological lab spaces in STEPS
*Train TAs in safety procedures
*With senior laboratory technician, acquaint other instructors using Biological Sciences laboratory spaces in STEPS with safety equipment and resources
*Teach students where safety equipment is located in laboratories
*Ensure rules are being obeyed by the students
*Aids in injury situations
*Contacting security, safety and administrative personnel for more serious situations
*Complete accident reports

Special Considerations
The duties of the position do not allow for a remote work option; the employee in this position will be required to work on campus where they can be fully accessible to the Lehigh community.
Daily 8:30 am to 5 pm or until conclusion of laboratory instruction; weekend hours vary according to laboratory schedule
The new hire for this position will start 01/03/2023
Qualifications
Doctorate in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Microbiology or equivalent combination of education and experience
Five to eight years related work experience
Teaching experience as an instructor in STEM preferred
One to three years of experience post-PhD required
Applicant should have taught lab courses independently using basic cellular, molecular and biochemical techniques
Experience training and supervising others such as graduate students and lab preparation personnel
Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and a high degree of initiative for bringing tasks to completion
Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, time management and sound judgment
Solid analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills
Excellent (written and oral) communication and interpersonal skills
Solid computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database software
Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
