Departmental Overview
Facilities Services is comprised of eight units which include: Campus Recycling and Refuse Services, Custodial Services, Customer Service Center, Engineering and Technical Services, Environmental Services, Grounds Operations, Shops, and People's Park. Facilities Services works to maintain a campus built environment that is conducive to teaching, learning and research. We strive to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the campus community. The Electrical Shop is responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical apparatus on the Berkeley campus. Under the direct supervision of the Sr. Superintendent of the Electrical Shop, this position supports the electrical unit by assisting with installation and repair of all lighting systems.

Responsibilities
Support to Electrical Shop
- Perform inspection, maintenance, testing, alteration, installation, trouble-shooting and repair of all lighting systems and all related emergency electronic/electrical components and systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair lighting failures from the wall switch to the installation of all types of diffusers.
- Maintain all systems including H.I.D., incandescent and fluorescent fixtures.
- Test emergency lighting systems and make repairs as necessary.
Administrative/ Technical Duties
- Use information to track work orders for job completion.
- Inspect assigned areas to determine needs and priorities for care, plan work activities schedule, make recommendations and assist in the selection of equipment and materials needed; keep extensive work records and prepare detailed reports of work done, time spent and materials utilized.
Safety
- Adhere to all university and departmental safety guidelines.
- Attend job-related and safety training as required.
Other Responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience repairing and updating/retrofitting all types of ballasts, switches, sockets, fuses, lamps, photocells, motion sensors and diffusers.
- Knowledge of electrical circuitry, inverter systems, wall packs and battery maintenance.
- Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with the campus community including students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel, in a multicultural environment.
- Ability to read blueprints and wiring diagrams to find electrical panels, lighting breakers and to install, emergency back-up batteries and dimming ballasts in all types of fixtures.
- Knowledge and understanding of safe work practices.
- Sufficient writing and computer skills to complete forms, job status reports, logs, etc.
- Intimate knowledge of the dangers associated with electrical systems up to 480V and the ability and willingness to utilize lockout/tag out procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Ability to work safely off ladders, lifts, scaffolding and other devices intended for working in high spaces.
Salary & Benefits
- This is a full-time (40 hours/week), non-exempt, career position, eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is $24.08 (Step 1.0).
