About the Position:
The California State University Project Rebound Consortium is a state- and grant-funded network of programs operating at CSU campuses in Bakersfield, East Bay, Fresno, Fullerton, Humboldt, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, Pomona, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Marcos, and Stanislaus. The mission of the Consortium is to support the higher education and successful reintegration of the formerly incarcerated. Project Rebound constructs a life-affirming alternative to the revolving door policies of mass incarceration by making higher education more accessible and supportive of formerly incarcerated students so that they can acquire the knowledge and skills of a university education, enhance their capacity for civic engagement and community leadership, secure meaningful and gratifying employment, empower themselves and their families, and ultimately make stronger, safer communities. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Executive Director, Project Rebound. California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) invites applications from qualified applicants to lead its campus Project Rebound program. Project Rebound is a system-wide, well-established program that is nationally recognized for transforming the lives of formerly incarcerated individuals through higher education. Project Rebound at CSUF was founded in 2016 and the Executive Director will now lead the next phase of the program by strengthening its infrastructure, leading the expansion of both curricular and co-curricular supports, and growing and nourishing partnerships to fulfill the goals and mission of the program.
Reporting to the Vice Provost, the Executive Director of Project Rebound at CSUF will lead and provide direction for CSUF's Project Rebound campus program, overseeing the program budget, structuring optimal distribution and development of human resources, seeking and growing internal and external partnerships, and strategic planning in alignment with the direction of the Consortium's Executive Committee and its approved strategic plan. The Executive Director has primary responsibility for growing CSUF Project Rebound's portfolio of inter-divisional programs, services, and initiatives, centering the goals of eliminating equity gaps and cultivating cultures of care and belonging for formerly incarcerated students. The student population targeted by the program is culturally diverse, mostly first-generation, and historically underserved. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
An earned Masters degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the humanities, social sciences, liberal arts, or relevant field. Five years of progressively responsible and demonstrated successful experience in leading program direction and development. Demonstrated commitment to the education and empowerment of people whose lives have been directly impacted by the criminal legal system. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent ability to effectively communicate and interact with diverse constituencies at all levels within the University, including faculty, executive administration, and staff, as well as with volunteers, community partners, local, state, and federal officials from all three branches of government, and donors to ensure Project Rebounds goals and priorities are met. Experience in developing relationships with key stakeholders. Charismatic, dynamic, self-motivated, goal-oriented proven self-starter with the ability to connect ambitious creative vision to concrete strategies, objectives, and action plans. Strong writing skills to construct reports and communication to convey Project Rebounds strategies, goals, outputs, outcomes, revenues, and expenditures to various stakeholders, including the State Government.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of the history, policies, procedures, and impacts of the criminal legal system, as well as the state and national ecosystems of criminal justice reform. Lived experience of incarceration and/or the criminal legal system is considered an asset. A track record of working with correctional institutions, formerly incarcerated individuals, community-based organizations, and/or public officials working in the criminal justice reform arena. Ability to develop and manage academic programs designed to educate and engage students in matters of civic engagement, grassroots approaches to democracy and policy reform. Ability to thrive in an environment of change. Comfortable with ambiguous situations and creative problem solver.
