Departmental Overview
UC Berkeley's School of Law is one of the nation's great centers for legal education, ever exploring and pushing new intellectual boundaries while tackling urgent, real-world issues. The law school is also known for its vibrant and engaged community of students and scholars who are committed to providing leadership and making a difference on problems of local, national and global import. Currently ranked among the top law schools in the country, the School of Law has ambitious development goals as it looks to continue producing leaders in law, government, and society.
Both BCLT and BJI are Centers within the UC Berkeley Law School. Berkeley Law is known for its vibrant and engaged community of students and scholars who are committed to making a difference on problems of local, national, and global import.
The Berkeley Center for Law & Technology (BCLT) is widely recognized as providing the nation's #1 program in intellectual property law. For more than 25 years, BCLT has been the focal point at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law for teaching, research, convening, and student activities on issues at the intersection of law and technology. The mission of BCLT is to foster the beneficial and ethical advancement of technology by guiding the development of intellectual property law, information privacy law, and related areas of law and public policy as they interact with business, science, and technical innovation.
Established in 1995 with a focus on intellectual property, BCLT has expanded over the years to encompass privacy, cyber-crime and cybersecurity, digital entertainment, biotech, telecommunications regulation, and many other areas of constitutional, regulatory, and business law that are affected by new technologies. As the focal point at the UC Berkeley School of Law for activities focused on the role of technology in society, we acknowledge and seek ways to further explore and address the intersections of technology, race, and justice.
The Berkeley Judicial Institute (BJI), directed by former Judge Jeremy Fogel, seeks to fill a long-standing need to establish an effective bridge between the legal academy and the judiciary for the primary purpose of promoting judicial integrity and judicial independence. Judicial integrity encompasses professional competence, high ethical standards, objectivity, impartiality, respect for due process, and judicial wellness. BJI will also focus on supporting and expanding innovation in education for and about the judiciary and developing best practices for efficient case management and judicial administration. BJI and BCLT work together on a number of projects, including working with the Federal Judicial Center (FJC) to continue and refine the long-standing collaboration of the FJC and BCLT on technology programs and resources for federal judges.
