Department Description
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Upward Bound Program is one of 8 federally funded TRIO programs awarded to the University of California, Davis. Four of them are administered from the main campus in Davis and four from the College OPTIONS office located in Redding, CA.
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Upward Bound Program Director, provide services to ethnically, linguistically and/or economically diverse middle and high school students in targeted schools to assist them with entrance into post-secondary education; develop an annual comprehensive work plan and work within the school system to deliver information regarding college admissions, career choices, study skills, financial aid and other college-related issues according to the plan; assist with summer residential program. Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to program participants and assist with student recruitment.
POSITION INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Driving for long periods of time.
- Lifting 25 - 30 lbs of printed materials.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Valid CA driver's license required.
- Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
- Measles vaccination or proof of illness required.
- Participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which will include TB screening.
- Restricted vacation during peak periods.
- Work flexible schedule, occasional evenings/nights, occasional overtime, varied lunch hours, and weekends and holidays.
- Position is a mandatory reporter for known or suspected child abuse and requires that a statement acknowledging the requirement to report child abuse be signed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Teaching, counseling, tutoring or youth development experience serving large numbers of ethnically, linguistically and/or economically diverse middle and high school students.
- Knowledge of UC, CSU and Community College admissions and financial aid policies and procedures and experience communicating them to a broad audience.
- Experience with outreach efforts to increase educational achievement, specifically among students from diverse populations and language backgrounds, and familiarity and sensitivity to the academic, social, and emotional factors confronting them.
- Communication skills to prepare and deliver oral presentations and to prepare written reports, correspondence, proposals, program assessments, email and other materials for a variety of audiences, ensuring compliance with departmental and university guidelines, practices and principles.
- Interpersonal skills to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds to establish and maintain collaborative relationships.
- Knowledge of both public schools (K-12) and the California systems of higher education (CCC, CSU, UC, and AICCU ) which includes knowledge of academic standards, administrative structure, faculty relations, school protocol, school communities, categorical funding, and the Master Plan of Education in California.
Preferred:
- Experience with California public school system.
- Experience with outreach efforts to increase educational achievement, specifically among students from diverse populations and language backgrounds.
- Experience analyzing, interpreting, evaluating and applying federal/state/university policies.
- Experience researching, identifying and validating student activities and programs.
- Knowledge of Family Education Rights and Privacy Act and ability to handle and work with confidential records and materials of minors.
- Skills to develop innovative solutions and programs.
- Computer skills to utilize various programs and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and student database management.

Background Check
This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks. This position is subject to the California Department of Motor Vehicles Pull Notice System. This position requires a Pre-Employment Physical.
