Institution Description: The United States Military Academy (USMA) was founded at West Point, New York in 1802 and has a unique and inspiring role among U.S. colleges and universities. West Point’s mission is to prepare student cadets (college students) to be leaders of character and commissioned officers in the United States Army, where they serve for at least five years after graduation. West Point is a highly selective undergraduate college that provides a robust academic program in which its 4,400 cadets (approximately 1,200 per class) take 27 core courses and 13 discipline-specific courses (40 total) to earn a Bachelor of Sciences degree in one of USMA’s 35 majors. Class size is small, with 18 or fewer cadets per class. The 4,400 West Point cadets are 25% women and 33% ethic/racial minority and include dozens of international and sister-service (e.g., US Naval Academy) exchange cadets. The West Point faculty includes 28% civilian professors, almost all of whom have earned PhDs in their disciplines. In 2022, West Point faculty taught and mentored cadets to earn the highest combined number of Rhodes (4) and Marshall Scholars (2) of any institute of higher learning in the nation. Additionally, even though West Point produces only 20% of the Army Officer Corps, over 50% of the Army’s four-star generals (the highest military rank) are West Point graduates. In other words, West Point’s faculty and staff educate, train, and inspire many of the future leaders of our nation. West Point’s five domains of faculty excellence are teaching, developing cadets, developing other faculty members, service to the department and USMA, and scholarship. West Point is continually ranked as one of the finest institutions of higher learning in the world, including being ranked in the top-five of having the most accessible professors, and having one of the top undergraduate business programs in the country (which is BS&L’s Management academic major).
Geographical Location: Located 50 miles north of New York City in the historic Hudson River Valley, West Point is a beautiful campus located at the intersection of the Northeast’s exciting academic, industry, government, and social sectors. Major population centers close by include New York City (1 hour), Philadelphia (2.5 hours), Boston (3.5 hours), and Washington, D.C. (5 hours).
