Description:
The Graduate Communications Design department invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin in January 2023 to teach courses in our Packaging Identity and Systems Design program as well as our MFA in Communications Design. The successful candidate will work within and across these programs. This is a one year appointment with the option of renewal for up to three years.
We seek applicants whose portfolios demonstrate professional experience and knowledge in any of the following areas of expertise: experimental form-making in both physical and digital spaces; 3d prototyping and production; package science; system-centric design; circular economies, social and economic sustainability, biodesign and material research. Experience in the creation or management of a makerspace or production lab is strongly encouraged. Professional or scholarly focus may include a broad set of interests and applications outside traditional graphic design, including but not limited to: design and accessibility; service design; community-based participatory research; design for social impact, policy and organizational change; design innovation; and entrepreneurship. Successful candidates' pedagogy and research engage historical and critical perspectives on communications design, including issues surrounding sustainability, technological advancement, and equity and inclusion.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate a commitment to curricular development and pedagogical innovation as well as a passion for fostering institutional change through service and interdisciplinary collaboration. A strong record of achievement that includes professional practice, research, scholarship and creative activity is required. Position Description
The successful candidate will:
-
Teach a range of graduate communications design courses. -
Have a recognized research/scholarship practice, creative activity and/or professional practice. -
Actively participate in departmental and institutional service, including committee work and academic support services including, but not limited to, curricular coordination and development, curricular assessment, supervision of student organizations, student advising and recruitment activities.
Qualifications:
Education
MFA or MDes or degree equivalent in communications design, visual communication, industrial design, design and innovation, or related discipline.
Experience
-
Demonstrated excellence in teaching with a minimum of 2 years of experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. -
3-5 years of recognized creative scholarship and/or current professional practice in the field of communication design or related discipline. -
Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. -
Excellent collaborator with management and leadership skills. -
Expertise in a broad range of methodologies, concepts, techniques and technology related to communications design practice.

Demonstrated ability to work with other faculty and students on interdisciplinary/collaborative projects.
Salary range is $74,000 - $80,000.
