Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas, invites applications for a tenure-track, dual-appointment as Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of History and Director of African American Studies starting Fall 2023.

We seek to hire a historian with a proven interest in innovative pedagogies, an entrepreneurial approach to higher education, and demonstrated success engaging a highly diverse student body.

The successful candidate will spend part of their time teaching a mix of history classes and African-American studies classes, including both halves of the North American history survey (conceived more broadly as a continental history) and a range of lower- and upper-division courses in African American History and/or African American Studies in the department’s skills-focused curriculum.

As Director of African-American Studies, the candidate will further develop and coordinate

• the academic minor and course offerings in African American Studies
• the Center for African American Studies, which develops academic and cultural programming and events for the campus and the local community.

Crucial to the position is providing leadership in developing partnerships with students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community to contribute to extra-curricular activities in support of African-American studies and Black students. Requirements:

• Doctorate in History or related field (ABD will be considered if degree will be complete by August 2023)
• Commitment to TLU's strategic focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
• Ability to connect with students and navigate the landscape of diversity, equity and inclusion
• Passion for teaching
• Some experience with assessment and curriculum development
• Willingness to engage in professional development, both pedagogy and scholarship
• Willingness to engage in community service and public outreach
• Ability to work collegially with other faculty members in the department and across campus
• Understanding and support of the mission of Texas Lutheran University

Desirable:

• Demonstrated experience coordinating academic/cultural programs
