Augsburg University invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor position in Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies (CRES), specializing in Black Studies. This new department emerges from a collaborative effort by faculty and student advocates at Augsburg in response to the ongoing movements around racial equity and social justice.
We welcome applicants with broad teaching and scholarly expertise in Black and Afro-diasporic experiences in the United States context. We are particularly interested in scholars working on critical race theory, abolitionist theory, Black feminist thought, Black queer studies, and/or Black visual cultures, who deploy historical methods, oral histories, participatory and community-based research, or other related critical research methodologies. Scholars with transnational, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches are especially encouraged to apply.
Tenure track faculty teach six classes per year on a nine-month (two semesters) schedule, combining lower-level introductory courses with upper-level courses in their areas of specialty. This position will begin in August 2023.
Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. or international equivalent in African American Studies, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, History, Cultural Studies, social sciences or other related fields is required for this position. Doctoral candidates will be considered if the doctorate will be completed by August 2023.
Preferred Qualifications
Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, excellent experiences in teaching, a strong research agenda, and decolonial approaches to history with a global framework. Candidates should demonstrate strength and commitment in teaching, scholarship/creative pursuits, service, and mentoring students.
The new hire will contribute to the design, development, and direction of the department. The candidate will be expected to teach introductory courses and develop other courses in Black studies, especially addressing the historical and contemporary Black experience in the United States, including but not limited to: gender, slavery, race, labor, immigration, incarceration, antiracist movements, and transatlantic/ hemispheric perspectives.
