Graduate Studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for a full-time faculty position to serve as program director for the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting MFA program at our private art and design college nationally known for the high quality of its graduate programs, its dedication to student learning and teaching excellence, and its distinction in fine art at national and international levels. The program director position, a faculty role with substantial leadership responsibilities, begins August 2023.

Job Description:
Graduate Studies at MICA seeks a high-profile candidate and dedicated educator with significant professional experience in painting to serve as a full-time faculty director and administrator of the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting MFA.
The ideal candidate will have an established practice that demonstrates a critical engagement with painting that includes, but is not limited to, a dedicated practice that is active in the field and critical writing on painting, culture and theory. The ideal candidate will be a painter with a foundation in the history of painting, who is engaged with contemporary issues and has an understanding of the future of the field and its possibilities. The ability to develop a vision and set the future direction for this graduate program â unique among residential graduate arts programs for its sustained focus on the practice of painting â is an essential component of the job.
Graduate Studies seeks applicants with a global perspective who are committed to inspiring and preparing the next generation of artists as part of advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in the arts. Ideal candidates will be open to exploring innovative ways to craft curricula, experiences, and research projects that empower our graduate students to envision the future of painting. Candidates should have experience developing student-centered programs, pedagogical approaches, research and material practices relevant to a student, faculty, and community population rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender, culture, physical ability and class. They should have an enthusiasm for working in Baltimore and building connections with the dynamic arts scene, spaces, and creative community in the city.
The director provides the academic and administrative leadership of this program of about 28 students. In addition to their role in student mentorship, the director assumes the administrative responsibilities of the graduate program, including the oversight of curriculum, academic programming, student admission, program assessment, budget management, relevant accreditation activities, and strategic partnerships and alliances. The program director hires Artists/Critics-in-Residence, visiting artists, and/or part-time and full-time faculty, depending upon program need and institutional approval. During the academic year, the director will have a presence on campus 3 - 4 days per week, dividing their time between administrative responsibilities and teaching/mentoring graduate students.
The program director is expected to contribute to the life of Graduate Studies and the College through meetings with Graduate Studies colleagues, cross-programmatic collaboration, committee work, community engagement, and other institution-related duties. All full-time faculty at MICA are expected to pursue research and/or professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission of the College. The position reports to the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies.
The following are minimum qualifications for the position:
- MFA degree or equivalent professional experience in painting or related field
- Distinguished professional career in painting
- Experience with academic program management or other administrative responsibilities
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity in art and design education
- Experience teaching at graduate and/or undergraduate levels or in alternative learning spaces such as residencies, research programs, and community organizations
- Demonstrated ability to support professional development of painters or emerging arts practitioners
- Evidence of ability to work with colleagues across disciplinary boundaries
- Excellent communication skills

Preferred qualifications:
- A proven track record of working collaboratively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, education levels and degrees of professional training
- Deep or broad experiences in teaching at the college level
- Experience with curriculum development and assessment
- Demonstrated ease with networking, writing, and presentationÂ
- Experience working with English Language Learners and students with varied abilities and cultural backgrounds
- Comfort with digital management systems such as Google Workspace and Workday.

The LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting is a 2-year Master of Fine Arts program allowing serious painters to find their individual voices in dialogue with guest faculty including professional artists and critics working in the field. Unique in its structuring, students develop their skills in speaking and writing about their work within a supportive group setting with peers selected to represent a broad range of approaches to the culture and history of painting today.
