The School of Professional Studies (SPS) at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time position at Associate Professor of Professional Practice or Professor of Professional Practice to teach in the MS Negotiation and Conflict Resolution program. The degree prepares graduates to develop essential skills in negotiation, mediation, collaboration, peacebuilding, conflict, and social transformation, to lead 21st century change. Students learn skills, methodologies, and theories that will allow them to leverage relevant conflict analysis data to improve organizational and community outcomes.
This position will begin on July 1, 2023. This is a full-time appointment with a multi-year renewal contingent on successful review.
We are seeking high-quality candidates with a graduate or terminal degree in anthropology, human rights, international relations, law, political science, psychology (industrial, organizational, or social), sociology, or other disciplines directly related to negotiation and mediation, conflict resolution, or peacebuilding. The ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders to develop interventions and capacity building is also welcome.
This position will involve regular teaching in the program's core and elective courses.
The successful candidate will teach courses related to conflict analysis, conflict resolution theory and practice, fieldwork practicum, and special topics on an as-needed basis. The Associate Professor of Professional Practice/Professor of Professional Practice will also participate in instructional design, admissions, student mentoring, and overall development of the Negotiation and Conflict Resolution program.
We seek professionals who have experience using a scholar-practitioner model, meaning that they use theory to inform their practice and practice to inform their scholarship. In addition, we are looking to see the ways in which the candidate incorporates DEIA considerations into their practice and scholarship.
All applicants must have a BA/BS degree. A doctoral or terminal degree is strongly preferred.
Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching and professional growth.
Candidates at the rank of Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have attained a superlative record of teaching and professional expertise.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will:
Hold a doctoral degree in anthropology, human rights, international relations, law, political science, psychology (industrial, organizational, social), sociology, or other disciplines related to, negotiation, conflict resolution, or peacebuilding.
Possess 10+ years of professional practice in applied settings, including leadership roles directing departments or organizations.
Exhibit a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design, and professional practice and/or scholarship.
Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the classroom and professional practice.
