General Purpose: The Information Literacy & Instructional Design Librarian develops and supports frameworks, tools, services, activities, and experiences to support student information literacy and critical thinking skills in and alongside the curriculum. The Information Literacy & Instructional Design Librarian will also actively participate in library liaison work including reference, collection development, instruction, and departmental outreach. 

Summary of Essential Functions:

• Enhances the library’s Information Literacy Program with new developments in information literacy, instructional design, library instruction, and instruction assessment. 

• Develops learning tools, services, activities, and experiences that support information literacy and critical thinking.

• Promotes meaningful information literacy integration into coursework and other student activities to a variety of campus constituencies. 

• Coordinates library instruction sessions and participates in other library outreach activities on and off campus.

• Works with stakeholders to design assessments of teaching and learning activities.

• Participates in library liaison work including reference, collection development, instruction, and departmental outreach. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Keeps abreast of new developments in information literacy, instructional design, library instruction, and instruction assessment.

• Updates Information Literacy Program to be in alignment with current pedagogy, philosophy, and practices as well as the library’s mission, vision, and values.

• Designs multi-media online tutorials, guides to resources, lesson plans and other presentations for library instruction information literacy initiatives.

• Develops assessment and evaluation tools for teaching and learning activities.

• Develops frameworks for creating and scheduling instruction sessions. 

• Creates and maintains guidelines that ensure consistency in library instruction across librarians.  

• Organizes opportunities designed to foster the teaching skills of library employees.

• Partners with departments as a subject liaison including providing outreach and collection development for those assigned areas.

• Performs instruction for liaison areas as well as a percentage of first-year instruction in accordance with the number of enrolled students in their liaison areas. 

• Develops activities, outreach tools, or programs that promote social justice, equity, and diversity. 

• Participates in library outreach activities on and off campus.

• Provides reference and research consultation services through a variety of access points including email and in person.

• Assists in developing a campus-wide information literacy policy and skills assessment.

• Participates in campus-wide committees to help promote information literacy.

• Actively cultivates new and maintains existing partnerships with appropriate academic and co-curricular departments on campus, organizations in Baltimore, and within the field of librarianship. 

• Contributes to the profession, whether through professional organizations or through other efforts. Activities may include work on a committee, task force, or other group; work on projects sponsored by professional organizations; or other professional efforts.

• Engages in professional development through professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees, reading professional literature, and attending and participating in staff workshops and meetings. 

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Research skills in a dynamic electronic environment such as effective database searching techniques, strategies, and use of a variety of programs and digital research platforms.

• Knowledge of the (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education and other important instruction information literacy practices and the assessment of them.

• Knowledge of “Best Practices” of classroom pedagogy in higher education to be able to apply these practices.

• Public speaking skills to make effective and engaging presentations to diverse groups. 

• Work flexibly, independently, and collaboratively with colleagues, staff, faculty, and students fostering a collegial work environment that encourages growth, inclusivity, innovation, curiosity, and rigor.

Minimum qualifications: 

• ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent advanced degree is required.

• Subject knowledge in art, art history, or design.

• Demonstrated experience with user instruction.

• Exceptional communication, interpersonal, presentation, and teaching skills.

• Exceptional organizational skills, problem-solving skills, attention to detail and accuracy, and the ability to set and keep deadlines. 

• Demonstrated experience with promoting social justice, equity, and diversity. 

Preferred qualifications: 

• Academic background, coursework, or experience with instructional design concepts.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively teach information literacy skills in a classroom setting.

• Demonstrated liaison librarian experience. 

Reporting to this position: (no direct reports)

Condition of Employment: 

• Flexible schedule requires regular day and evening hours and occasional weekend hours, varying with academic calendar; 

• Travel to professional meetings

•  Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
