The Department of Geography, Planning, & Sustainability welcomes applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of environmental planning, with specialties in areas such as: climate-adapted infrastructure, green infrastructure that promotes regenerative ecosystems and reduces threats to biodiversity, planning towards a post-carbon economy, planning to enhance social and environmental justice. Candidates utilizing quantitative planning methods are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates that link their scholarship and teaching to planning law, land use law, and/or public engagement through the lens of the climate crisis and/or the biodiversity crisis will be exceptionally competitive for this position. A Ph.D. in planning or closely related discipline is required at the time of hire.
The successful candidate will demonstrate success at research and publication with established grants or potential to receive them, particularly federal grants. Our department offers an undergraduate B.S. in Community and Environmental Planning and an M.S. in Urban and Regional Planning, along with three other degree programs in GIS, Environmental and Sustainability Studies, and Geography. Competitive applicants will demonstrate excellence in teaching both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as appropriate preparation that includes representative course syllabi and assignments, teaching experience, and other evidence of effectiveness. Teaching duties will include introductory and advanced courses in planning, including planning methods and metropolitan and regional governance.
The Department values service to the University and our communities, and the successful candidate will be expected to engage in appropriate service. The Department also values the AICP credential and the Professional Planning (New Jersey specific) license; the successful candidate should possess either or both of these credentials or outline a commitment to obtaining them as part of future professional development.

The School of Earth & Environment is integral to Rowan’s Catalysts for Sustainability program, which coalesces a group of scholars from each of the university’s schools and colleges around the themes of the climate and biodiversity crises. Scholars hired in the School of Earth & Environment will have outstanding communication skills, a deep commitment to advancing solutions to the climate crisis and biodiversity crisis, and will have demonstrated dedication to sharing their scholarship with the public through various outreach initiatives.
