Job Summary Overview:
The Department of Architecture, in the Division of Architecture + Design, at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), invites applications for two full-time faculty appointments at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor, to commence fall 2023. Rank will be dependent on professional status and teaching experience.
RISD recognizes principles of social equity, diversity, and inclusion as fundamental to its academic mission as an art and design school. We understand these principles to require ongoing attention to differential embodied experience and expansion of the forms of knowledge from which our curricula originate. RISD is engaged in the collective work of institutional transformation and would value applicants whose pedagogical and professional experiences have prepared them to foster equitable teaching and learning environments. We seek applicants whose teaching and professional work (creative practice and/or academic scholarship) attends to embodied difference as intersectional and centers on bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities. We encourage applicants from traditionally underrepresented communities including Native American peoples, Black and Indigenous peoples of color, Latinx, people who identify as LGBTQIA+, veterans, and persons with disabilities.
The department seeks qualified individuals to offer graduate and undergraduate-level instruction in architectural design. These are design-plus positions and successful candidates will teach design studios at core, advanced, and thesis levels, in addition to offering foundational and advanced courses based on a particular area of their expertise.
The department is particularly interested in applicants with deep knowledge and applied experience in architectural technology, as well as applicants with expertise and an active practice engaged in history/theory/criticism of architecture.
The architectural technology undergraduate and graduate curriculum emphasizes the importance of close observation of the physical world, iterative exploration of material application, and applied construction and documentation methods. Successful candidates must be capable of teaching or team-teaching courses such as Phenomena, Architectural Anatomy, Architectural Design, Environmental Design, Structural Design, Enclosure Design, and Building Assembly and Systems Design.
The history/theory/criticism undergraduate and graduate curriculum introduces key ideas, forces, and techniques that have shaped the discipline of architecture through the ages, emphasizing both historical and global interconnectedness, recurrent conflicts, and what it means to engage, cultivate, and disseminate architectural ideas, knowledge, debates, and discourse. Successful candidates must be capable of teaching or team-teaching courses such as Modern Architecture, World Architecture, Graduate Seminar: Making Discourse, Graduate Seminar: Disciplinarity, and Thesis. Please see https://www.risd.edu/academics/architecture/courses for more information regarding both curricula.
Current areas of Architecture faculty research and practice include: the practice of drawing, innovative models of professional practice, actively engaging questions of environmental and material ethics, design-build, writing and criticism, material engagement, digital and manual representation, and architectural history. Please see https://www.risd.edu/academics/architecture/faculty for more information.
The department values applicants with a strong commitment to professional and creative architectural practice, a clear and ambitious research agenda, experience with specific research methodologies, and an interest in transdisciplinary projects. Built upon the institutional commitment to shape just societies, lead in the charge to construct sustainable futures, and champion new ways of making and knowing, the department seeks a colleague whose work and teaching advances RISD's commitments to social equity, diversity, and inclusion in matters of racial, social, and environmental justice.
The department seeks applicants with: (1) a demonstrated record of scholarship and/or creative practice that aligns with RISD's Social Equity and Inclusion (SEI) mission, (2) evidence of successful, innovative, and collaborative teaching at the college level that addresses the inequalities endemic to social structures and the built environment, (3) demonstrated experience in developing and shaping architectural curricula, and (4) academic leadership experience and/or interest.
Job Qualifications Required:
- A professional degree in architecture or an allied discipline (B.Arch, M.Arch, or equivalent)
- A professional practice and/or licensure in architecture.
- A demonstrated record of teaching studios, lectures, and other courses in their area of expertise.
- Ability to support a globally and culturally diverse body of students in development of their design, critical thinking, and leadership skills.
- A creative practice and/or teaching record that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion, and engages works, cultures, and bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities.
- A clear research agenda supported by evidence of scholarly or design outcomes, which can be demonstrated through publications, curated exhibitions, installations, and/or built work.
- A demonstrated teaching and/or professional record that exemplifies inclusionary practice.
- A demonstrated record of inclusive leadership.
Job Qualifications Preferred:
- An advanced specialized degree (postgraduate, PhD) or strong evidence of contributions to one's area of expertise (e.g. publications, exhibitions, installations, built work).
- Professional experience and expertise in Building Science or Material Sustainability.
- As teaching is key to the RISD experience, the department seeks a colleague whose practice or scholarly agendas work in tandem with their teaching (i.e. by evidencing how one's area of expertise relates to curricular and pedagogical materials).
- Experience or demonstrated interest in cross-disciplinary teaching as it relates to one's area of expertise. Reflections on collaboration (e.g. team-teaching or professional partnerships) are strongly encouraged.
- Fluency in digital design media, including tools and software, as well as experience integrating emerging technologies or mediums with studio, seminar, and/or lecture teaching.
