Graduate School Faculty Position: Program Director of the Adolescent Special Education Programs

Start date: September 1, 2023

Salary:  with doctorate--$96,800; with masters--$94,050 for 12 months

Position Overview

The director of the Adolescent Special Education programs is a full-time, 12-month, on-campus faculty position made up of several components. In addition to serving as program director, the faculty member in this role will assume additional instructional and/or advising responsibilities.

The Adolescent Special Education Programs are currently Teaching Collaborative and Teaching Fellows partnership programs with the NYC Department of Education. The College is looking to expand these programs and the role at a future time may include leadership of residency and/or more traditional pathways in adolescent special education.

Bank Street College is not a tenure granting institution, nor does it have traditional professorial ranks. The position is eligible for a renewable 3-year contract pending a review period. 

Program Leadership

There are several core aspects of the work of the Program Director.  These include, but are not limited to:

• Reviewing program content, proposing curricular revisions as needed, and contributing to accreditation processes as needed. 
• Liaising with DOE partners.
• Ensuring that the college adheres to all of our stated deliverables in the original RFP with the DOE.
• Coordinating onboarding of new students with the admissions office and student service office.
• Organizing welcome events and outreach to new students.
• Developing and maintaining relationships with partner schools and site supervisors.
• Supporting the department chair in hiring and supporting adjuncts and fieldwork advisors.
• Meeting regularly with the department chair and department leadership team.
• Run monthly program meetings with program fieldwork advisors.
• Provide individualized academic guidance with students.  

• Oversee all aspects of supervised fieldwork in collaboration with program faculty, including planning the orientation, assigning students to faculty advisors, supporting faculty advisors.
• Other tasks as they emerge.

Fieldwork and/or Instructional Responsibilities

In addition, we are looking for expertise across at least 2-3 of the following content areas for course instruction/supervised fieldwork:

• Disability studies and special education history and policies
• Language development for adolescents with disabilities
• Curriculum development and modification in ELA, history, and/or STEM areas for adolescents with disabilities
• Formal and informal assessment of adolescents with disabilities 
• Supervision of graduate students in field placements
• Observing candidates at their sites 
• Engaging in reflective supervision
• Convening and facilitating regular one-on-one meetings with candidates to support professional development
• Leading and facilitating weekly conference group 

Additional Responsibilities

All full-time faculty must engage in service to the community through committee work and participation in program, department and divisional meetings; and mentor graduate students on their integrative master’s projects. 

This position is based in our Manhattan campus, but requires flexibility to teach online and in locations in other boroughs.

Qualifications:

• Masters in special education or related field is required

• Doctorate in special education or related field is preferred

• 5 or more years of teaching experience with adolescents with disabilities in public school settings
• Experience working with the NYCDOE
• Experience teaching in higher education 
• Some administrative experience preferred
• Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to principles of racial equity, social justice, and public schooling.
• All faculty must be fully vaccinated from COVID unless they have an approved religious or medical exemption.  

Filling position is dependent on enrollment.
