Successful candidates will demonstrate promise as design studio instructors capable of contributing expertise to a curricular area described below. The School of Architecture values diversity among its faculty, is committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community, and strongly encourages applications from women and minorities.
Areas of Expertise
The School seeks candidates capable of stellar teaching in undergraduate and graduate studios and who engage spatial, material, technical, historical, ecological, social, cultural, and/or economic issues through the lens of either:
- Environmental design and technology at the intersection of architecture, climate, and energy, and/or
- Advanced design-driven research through a creative practice
Candidates should identify one of the above areas and describe specific contributions to required undergraduate and graduate courses in history & theory, design & building technology, representation, or elective seminars. Use of simulation, computation, fabrication, and visualization to design, analyze, speculate, and pursue the knowledge, literacies, and agility needed to respond to complex global and local conditions are encouraged. Processes, tools, and methods that position architecture as citizenship, evolve design traditions and curricula, and engage in design/build, advocacy and participatory pedagogies are valued.
UTK School of Architecture faculty are required to engage through research. Candidates must articulate a proposed research agenda comprised of creative work, scholarly publication, engaged research, technical analysis, and/or other forms of intellectual investigation.

Faculty deliver curriculum in two main facilities: the 160,000-square-foot Art + Architecture Building, in the center of UT Knoxville's campus, and the 20,000-square-foot Fab Lab, an advanced maker space in downtown Knoxville. The "A+A" is an award-winning building which features open studios, a four-story atrium, the Ewing Gallery, a woodshop, review spaces, and lecture halls. Our Fab Lab, with over one-million dollars of equipment, including advanced machinery for digital and robotic fabrication, allows our faculty and students to integrate state-of-the-art fabrication technology into design education and research.
The school is committed to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion and to addressing the family needs of faculty members including dual-career couples, sole-provider or single-parent families, and faculty with family caretaking responsibilities.
