Background: Learning and Engagement (LEMCO) Program
This new program launched in the fall of 2021. It combines elements of the prior Museum Education and Leadership in Museum Education Programs at Bank Street with new content and a hybrid format (online classes combined with occasional meetups in NYC regional cities) Accepted students are often already working and can directly apply coursework to their practice. The program is designed to advance work in the cultural/non-profit sector with an emphasis on learning, inclusion/access and community engagement across the life span. Students represent different disciplines and interests: art, science, history, zoos, aquariums and gardens, as well as libraries, community centers and performing arts education work. The first year provides a solid background in education theory, human development, pedagogies, programming and collaboration. The second year focuses on education in the broader organizational context, including leadership, marketing/audience research, curriculum writing, grant writing and organizational dynamics. The program culminates in a Master of Science in Education and requires 36 credits.
Instructor for Partnerships and Collaborations Course (1 credit- spring 2023)
The ideal person should be an experienced museum or cultural sector professional or consultant with direct experience in a leadership position or who has demonstrated leadership in grappling with issues and challenges of the sector across (for example) art, science, history or natural history museums, parks, zoos, libraries, cultural centers, performing arts and other non-profits. He/she/they have direct experience designing and/or contributing partnerships and collaborations with external agencies and organizations. At the heart of this course is the notion that cultural organizations can be more effective and extend their impact by partnering and collaborating with outside organizations that share common goals and interests. The course includes some literature review/case studies of successful partnerships, community collaborations, and the processes around relationship building and understanding partners. The course can include a guest speaker(s) and can reference the student’s own organizational approaches to collaboration. This course follows after the programming course, and should extend some of the ideas in that course about planning public programs, thinking about intended outcomes, and social value/interaction with audiences (in this case, on the level of partners and collaborating organizations)
Course schedule:
The program meets online between September and May each year. This course is scheduled for the latter part of the spring semester, in April, and will take place mostly online. Since many of the students have day jobs, online classes take place on a weeknight or weekend time. Specific meeting times are listed here but individual sessions can, if necessary, be adjusted to accommodate student work schedules and that of the instructor.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and release a syllabus for the course with a detailed schedule of the various modules week by week, list of related resources/readings/assignments, what is expected of students and how they will be assessed.
- Upload syllabus, course materials and any online activities or submissions to Canvas (the online learning system at Bank Street) at least week/ten days before it starts
- Prepare short video or audio resources introducing topics before classes as needed.
- Grade assignments and offer comments/feedback
- Consult with Program Director before start of course and after for review purposes.
- Be in touch with other instructors that semester to avoid scheduling bottlenecks that might impact student workload.
Qualifications:*
- Master’s degree required;
- 7-10 years’ experience in within the public dimension of a cultural institution/non-profit organization with demonstrated experience in museum/cultural organization outreach and community engagement, especially the formation of partnerships and collaborations.
- Experience teaching or training on the subject, emphasizing the participation of the learner through discussions, activities, guest speakers and short presentations online is preferred. Being able to draw on a number of examples of partnerships from across the sector in different disciplines is also beneficial.
*Since this course is taught mainly online, candidates from out of state can apply, however we find it advantageous for online work if instructors are in the same or nearby time zones.
