Departmental Overview
UC Berkeley's Office of Communications and Public Affairs leads communications for the most elite public higher education institution in the world, conveying the quality, diversity, vitality, preeminence, and dedication to service of UC Berkeley. We reach diverse audiences and enhance relationships with constituents at all levels, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, parents, visitors, the media, industry, research sponsors, educators, government leaders, and the general public. Our mission is to promote the University's excellence in teaching, research, and public service, and inform stakeholders of our many contributions to the community - locally, nationally, and globally. We provide leadership and services in six integrated functions: News and Media Relations; Executive Communications; Critical Communications; Brand Marketing and Digital Communications; Public Relations and Special Projects, and Visitor and Parent Services.
Responsibilities
- Manages a team of media relations and content development specialists and provides oversight and direction. Selects, trains, guides, directs, evaluates, and, as required, takes corrective action with professional and support staff. Effectively manages professional staff responsible for producing a variety of communication pieces in a variety of venues, channels or mediums including written, visual and electronic communication.
- Oversees the campus-wide content development and media relations operation, working with senior campus administration and Communications & Public Affairs leadership. Creates, develops and implements long- and short-term strategic communications plans and/or projects and extends the messaging and brand work through campaigns and activities that support UC Berkeley's strategic priorities and amplify the core campus messages
- Advises and consults with campus leadership and campus communications leaders regarding strategic communications including effectively delivering the desired message, policy interpretation, problem resolution, etc. Collaboration, partnership and responsiveness are key success factors.
- Serve as spokesperson when needed.
Required Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media channels and outlets; technical aspects and requirements of various channels and outlets; and most appropriate and effective applications.
- Broad knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively manage/supervise experienced staff, including design concepts, various media, applications, etc.
- Strong knowledge of financial and personnel management, including understanding of management best practices, guiding principles, relevant laws, and policies.
- Effective management skills to select, train, evaluate, lead, direct, guide and motivate staff to produce high quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.
- Solid skills to create, develop and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communication plans.
- Strong skills in overall brand management and integrated communications that extend traditional communications.
- Social media familiarity and proven expertise in creating and executing campaigns that incorporate all forms of media.
- Excellent consulting skills and ability to create proposals and proven success in implementing public relations programs and efforts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of / passion for our campus, its achievements, mission, vision, strategic goals and priorities, policies, practices and infrastructure, and/or ability to learn quickly. Strong knowledge of current affairs and specialized subject matter. Strong knowledge of issues in higher education, public sector, and/or nonprofit environments preferred.
Salary & Benefits
Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $150,000 - $175,000.
The full salary range for this position classification is $112,100 - $216,700.
