Position Announcement:
The Herron School of Art and Design, IUPUI invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position in Sculpture to begin August 2023. This position will reside in the Fine Arts Department and will have a focus on contemporary sculpture and related practices.
We welcome both emerging and established artist/educators to share their vision and aspirations for contributing to our engaged and innovative contemporary sculpture program. For the emerging educator, Herron provides a unique space to learn and expand upon teaching and professional skills. They will develop a broad understanding of Sculptural curricula (development, implementation, and assessment). For faculty with a sustained record and commitment to teaching in Sculpture, they will lead the Sculpture Program and provide creative leadership in collaboration with faculty and school administration; mentor junior faculty, oversee the program budget and scheduling.
Applicants should be well versed in contemporary sculpture and visual culture with an active record of research/creative activities. They should also possess a broad range of understanding and experience of sculptural mediums and practices, knowledge of the history and theory of sculpture, and of the expanded field as it relates to contemporary art.
The successful candidate will teach all levels of sculpture and should demonstrate knowledge of how sculpture intersects with other visual arts and creative disciplines. They will exhibit strengths in original research, fresh approaches to teaching, and innovative approaches to utilizing technology. Knowledge and experience should also include the ability to emphasize both the conceptual and technical aspects of the discipline including traditional and emerging conventions, technologies, and practices.
A minimum of three years teaching experience beyond graduate school is required. Candidates are required to have a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Studio Art with an emphasis in Sculpture or equivalent, a well-developed portfolio in their area of specialization, and an exhibition record that demonstrates an emerging or established national reputation. They should be conversant in contemporary art issues and studio practices and enthusiastic about teaching in a diverse, multicultural setting.
The successful candidate should have an ability to actively engage with students at all levels and foster creative and intellectual dialogue with students and faculty in the context of a research university.
The successful candidate will support Herron School of Art and Design in a number of ways, including teaching undergraduate and occasionally graduate courses in sculpture and related areas and serving on graduate committees. They will contribute to the academic life of the Department, School, and University through teaching, research, service, and community engagement. An existing research agenda that reaches across traditional disciplinary boundaries is desirable, as this position offers opportunities for collaboration with faculty in departments across the campus and university. Course load is 2/3 with flexibility of course offerings to meet the demands of evolving curricular offerings.
The principal goals of this position are to conduct and disseminate research in the studio practice of sculpture and studio fine art and to foster learning experiences for students to develop professional knowledge and skills. The ideal candidate will also contribute to the diversity of the school by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or unique set of experiences that expands the intellectual conversation of the field.
Sculpture Program Profile
Herron's Sculpture program incorporates a wide variety of traditional and emerging technologies and is housed in a large, well equipped, state-of-the-art studio facility. Studio areas and facilities support research and creative learning in areas including wood, fibers, metals, foundry, digital fabrication, and time-based media and courses are integrative, driven to develop a broad range of skills with a commitment to conceptual and socially and community engaged work. The program has a long and rich history of supporting and advancing gallery-based practices and public art and leveraging teaching methods and approaches that help prepare students for professional careers that embrace and advance the roles and responsibilities of contemporary artists as key contributors to innovation and culturally engaged creative communities.
