Departmental Overview
Made possible by a $20-million commitment from the Paul and Stacy Jacobs Foundation, Berkeley Engineering launched the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation at the Clinton Global Initiative in June 2013. The Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation expands the role of design in undergraduate and masters-level engineering education at the University of California, Berkeley. As the Institute works to further its mission of educating leading innovators at the intersection of design and technology, it provides students with hands-on experiences and opportunities to work in interdisciplinary teams to address real societal issues. Students are challenged to approach the entire cycle of design, from identifying user needs to rapid prototyping to commercialization and manufacturing, from an integrated vantage point.
We accomplish these goals through a suite of offerings that include curricular, co-curricular and public programs. Core programs within the Jacobs Institute include:
- the Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation, an undergraduate certificate offered in partnership with the Haas School of Business, College of Letters & Science, and College of Environmental Design;
- a curriculum of 6-8 design-focused courses offered fall, spring and summer, for which the institute recruits lecturers and faculty;
- a makerspace staffed by professional and student workers which is accessed by 1200+ students each semester;
- mentorship and co-curricular programming for students, such as the Innovation Catalyst program;
- supporting 15+ design and innovation courses from campus departments and 25+ clubs and decals each semester by
- offering access to high quality teaching, meeting and event space;
- public events and speaker series;
- a professional Master of Design degree, offered in partnership with the College of Environmental Design and housed within the Jacobs Institute; and
- partnerships with companies and international universities.
The Jacobs Institute is housed in Jacobs Hall, a 24,000 square foot building equipped with design studios and equipment rooms featuring the latest in digital fabrication technologies.
Reporting to the Director of Academic Affairs, this position involves student services duties and responsibilities that support student engagement with the programs, activities, and services at Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation. Specifically, the position supports student recruitment, orientation, access and participation in the following curricular and co-curricular activities including: Jacobs Makerspace, DES INV courses, Master of Design (MDes) graduate program, Maker Launchpad summer program, student club activities, and the Innovation Catalysts grants program.

Responsibilities
35% Student Engagement
- Fosters student activities and engagement with Jacobs resources through leading outreach to and developing partnerships with individual students, student groups, underrepresented student communities, campus units, etc.
- Plans and implements programs, workshops, and services which effectively respond to the needs of a changing student body, at both the undergraduate level and graduate levels, including but not limited to specific cohorts of students (e.g., Master of Design, students historically underrepresented in STEM/design, new students, design/tech student groups, DeCals, etc.).
- Proactively develops programs, workshops, and services in support of creating and maintaining an diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for all students and the Jacobs community.
- Manages the student engagement office and serves as a first point of contact for prospective and current students to learn about Jacobs, its programs, and design resources.
- Manages and develops processes for communicating resources and opportunities to students, such as the student community email. Collaborates with other staff to keep student-facing communications (e.g., emails, handouts, social media, website, etc.) effective and up-to-date.
- Supports coordination and collaboration with the Master of Design Student Association (MDSA) and Jacobs Student Advisory Board, whose members ensure that the opinions, needs, and interests of the student community are represented during strategic planning and program development.
- Establishes relationships and serves as the point person between Jacobs Institute and other campus partners/units. Actively collaborates regarding the delivery of their services and programs to Jacobs/MDes students and/or develops and implements joint services and programs between their offices and Jacobs. Keep other Jacobs staff informed of updates regarding these departments' programs, services, and policies so accurate and timely information may be shared with students.
- Collects data to understand program outcomes and student satisfaction with programs and services offered. May advise staff in implementation and analysis.
30% Program and Event Management
- Manages student academic and co-curricular programs (e.g. Innovation Catalysts student grant program, Berkeley Engineering Design Scholars summer research program, Club Maker Pass program, DES INV DeCal sponsorship, etc.). General program management responsibilities for such programs include:
- Develops and manages marketing initiatives and project timelines, coordinates stakeholders, and facilitates student application review.
- Identifies needs of current students including cohorts of students historically underrepresented in STEM.
- Remains abreast of student trends on the Berkeley campus and develops recommendations to improve existing programs.
- Ensures policies are followed and clearly communicated to students.
- Keeps detailed statistics about programs and services on a consistent basis. Utilize data to develop reports on said programs and services.
- Leads the planning and implementation of student-facing events (e.g., workshops, presentations, tours, tabling, designations, open houses, etc.).
- Supports the planning and implementation of major Institute events (e.g., end of semester showcases, Master of Design orientation and commencement, public open houses, etc.).
15% Advising
- Applies academic advising concepts, experience, and knowledge of widely recognized advising theories/philosophies to identify and address student issues.
- Manages a caseload of up to 90 students using a holistic advising approach. Establish individualized, collaborative relationships with students to learn their skill levels, aptitudes, interests, and strengths.
- Engages students in assuming an active role in their academic planning and developing meaningful educational plans that correlate with their values, abilities, and life goals.
- Consults colleagues and other student service units regarding students who are experiencing complex academic, financial, and personal difficulties.
- Assesses problems that arise affecting students, investigate alternatives, and utilize creativity and expert understanding of student matters to devise and implement solutions.
- Advises students on college and university policies and procedures.
10% Student Services & Operations
- Makes recommendations to Jacobs leadership for the improvement of programs and/or policies.
- Collaborates with the Jacobs technical team to support the Maker Pass program (e.g., cardkey activation, explaining the activation process to new or prospective users, fee waiver review, etc.).
- Coordinates with other staff to respond to student operational needs (e.g., scheduling student group events and meetings, building access issues, etc.).
- Stays abreast of emerging technologies and identifies ways to enhance programs and services by utilizing them.
10% Student Supervision
- Manages student assistants who support the above activities, especially student engagement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
- Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.

Salary & Benefits
The salary range designated for this position: $56,500 - $76,900; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits.
