Department: WCAS Art History
The Department of Art History at Northwestern University invites applications for a fulltime, tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in Modern art and/or architectural history of the Global South in the later 19th-mid-20th centuries, to begin September 1, 2023. We seek to hire a specialist whose work crosses cultural fields and geographies (nations, regions, continents, oceans, or hemispheres) in ways that respond to the global interconnections and asymmetries of the period. Ideal candidates would complement and expand upon the current geographic strengths of our modern curriculum including Africa and African diaspora, the Middle East, Europe, Transnational Socialism and the Eastern bloc, and the United States. We especially welcome candidates whose research and teaching critically disrupt Eurocentric axes of global exchange or put into question conventional methodological or theoretical approaches to the study of modernism. Our department is firmly committed to racial justice and equity, here and across the world. Ph.D. required by start date.
To apply, please submit to the Art History Department (https://arthistory.northwestern.edu/about/open-positions/index.html) 1) a letter of application explaining your research accomplishments and goals, and your teaching ideals, commitments, and strengths; 2) a statement about how your research and pedagogy contribute to Northwestern’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; 3) a current CV; 4) one sample course syllabus from within your specific field or for a global modern survey; and 5) the names of three references with contact information. Candidates who advance in the search will be asked to submit a writing sample of no more than 10,000 words. Review of applications will begin by November 15. For questions about the search, please contact Mel Keiser at mel.keiser@northwestern.edu.
Please read ALL instructions and make preparations before proceeding to the application page:
- Applications will only be accepted via online submission (see link below).
- Please prepare all documents in advance as Adobe PDF files, and please be sure all information is entered correctly and accurately (especially names and email addresses), as there will be no opportunity for online revision after your application has been submitted.
- Please also prepare a list of names and email addresses for your external academic references; your references will be contacted directly by the online system and invited to upload their letters on your behalf.
- All required fields in the application form are marked with an asterisk and must be filled before clicking the “Submit” button.
- Be aware that incomplete applications cannot be saved.
