Departmental Overview
The Master of Computational Social Science (MaCSS) is a one-year, on-campus program that will provide students with practical skills for analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing social data. Social data are simply data about people, groups, organizations, and their interactions from surveys and censuses, company websites, store loyalty cards, cell-phone records, Twitter posts, internet searches, etc. MaCSS graduates will be able to work as analysts and data specialists in business, non-profit, and government settings.
Administratively, the MaCSS program will be housed in the Interdisciplinary Social Science Programs in the College of Letters and Science. It will be overseen by a Faculty Director, an Executive Director, and a Graduate Group. They will be assisted by a Graduate Student Affairs Officer (GSAO) and two staff who focus on career development and placement.

Responsibilities
Advertising and promoting the program to recruiters, donors, prospective students, and prospective instructors; managing finances; managing operations; recommending program and policy changes.
Sell the program to prospective employers in business, government, and nonprofits.
- Raise funds for fellowships.
- Work with the FD to recruit an Industry Advisory Board: senior people from industry and government who oversee data analytics and whose organizations may be willing to hire program graduates.
- Work with the FD to market the program to students at and alumni from women's colleges, HBCUs, HSIs, and TCUs, as well as other public and private universities and colleges.
- Recruit staff to handle career services/recruiting and student services: design job descriptions, manage the HR approval process, do outreach to find applicants, manage interviews and hiring.
- Work with the FD to recruit faculty to teach: both Senate faculty and lecturers from campus, as well as lecturers from industry or government.
- Recruit teaching assistants (Graduate Student Instructors, aka GSIs): design job descriptions, manage the HR approval process; do outreach to recruit GSIs, manage interviews and hiring.
- Reach out to other units on campus to cooperate on joint interests: Social Science departments and interdisciplinary programs; the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS); and the professional schools, to cooperate on achieving interests we have in common.
- Work with the GG to identify and contact industry, government organizations, and nongovernmental organizations to get data for capstone projects.
Manage financial resources:
- Handle all accounting, including compensation.
- Work with the FD to plan, forecast, and implement non-compensation budgets.
- Manage contracts with Summer Session and with vendors (e.g., software).
- Oversee fundraising: donations for fellowships and teaching awards.
- Coordinate with the GG to select students for merit and need fellowships; distribute fellowships.
Coordinate the faculty who teach in the program:
- Work with the FD and GG to recruit and socialize faculty into the program's unique integration of computing tools and techniques, applied statistics, and social science.
- Guide faculty to supervise and evaluate GSIs.
- Provide support to faculty who team-teach courses to facilitate their coordinating materials and activities.
- Provide support and guidance to FD in order to design course assessment tools to provide feedback that will guide faculty course revisions.
Manage staff to optimize student experience:
- 3 staff people at full scale: 1 Program Advisor and 2 Career Development Professionals.
- Oversee staff recruitment and hiring (in collaboration with the FD and GG).
- Conduct staff and GSI performance appraisals and salary actions.
- Manage other staff HR issues.
- Oversee marketing efforts to both prospective employers and students by Career Development Professionals; hire vendor to design website (& MCSS logo), brochures, etc; visit job fairs and university/college campuses to recruit students (& inform career advisors about the program)
- Contribute to developing a team environment that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to sell the program to prospective students, to potential employers, and to industry partners.
- Ability to work independently, while also managing staff.
- Ability to deal with the uncertainty of working in a startup operation that is nested in a very bureaucratic organization.
- Willingness to innovate, to take risks even though things won't always work out; willingness to monitor outcomes and adjust actions as necessary.
- Experience with administrative, budgetary, human resources, and financial processes and practices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills - persuasion.
- A desire to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
- Bachelor's degree in social science and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
- MA in social science or applied social science.
- Experience selling products, programs, or organizations: in the sales/marketing, fundraising, recruiting, or admissions functions of a university, firm, or non-profit.
- Some experience with data analytics (basic understanding of the content and intent of the MCSS curriculum).
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $120,000.00 - $150,000.00.
