Director of Debate
Hobart William Smith Colleges

Description
The Director of Debate has primary responsibility for the HWS Debate Team.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Facilitate 2-3 Debate Team practices each week to include speaking/presentation drills, preparation skills, debating strategy, content workshops, practice rounds, etc.
- Coordinate the Debate Team's registration and travel arrangements to local and more distant tournaments and supervise their safety while attending events and traveling off-campus. (Approximately 15 weekend debate tournaments each year, pre-Covid)
- Accompany Debate Team members at the World Universities Debating Championships (annually).
- Coordinate the team running two tournaments each year, a large fall BP tournament (e.g., HWS IV or NAUDC), and the HWS International Round Robin in the spring semester.
- Organize on-campus public debating events as time permits (e.g., workshops/scrimmages with local schools, the Finger Lakes Cup Challenge Debate, a life raft debate).
- Work to develop outreach programs to high school debate leagues, including Urban Debate Leagues.
- Recruit domestic and international high school debaters to apply to and attend HWS, including interviewing them for debate scholarships.
- Work to innovate, refine, and implement debating theory and practice (e.g. - tournament design, judging norms, debate strategy, equity policy, etc.) within the international debating community in collaboration with HWS students and the founder of the HWS Debate Team.
- Teach two sections (one per semester) of a course in their area of expertise.
- Support faculty members interested in using debate as a classroom activity.
- Promote the development of team case file and strategy materials.
- Demonstrate knowledge for the Colleges' educational philosophy and mission.
- Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Other Information:
This is a full-time, 10-month (August-May), benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
Qualifications
- Degree at the bachelors level required. Masters or higher preferred.
- Qualified candidates will have experience teaching and coaching debate and public speaking.
- Substantial experience in WUDC (i.e., British Parliamentary) debating as a debater, judge and trainer is strongly preferred.
- This position requires driving Debate Team members to events.
- A valid drivers license and clean driving record is required.
- Applicants should be comfortable driving a 12-15 passenger van and will need to pass a basic van driving test given by HWS.
- The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
