This Position
Are you a DEI professional who is passionate about advancing equity and opportunity in institutions of higher education? Are you someone who has experience working to make communities and spaces more inclusive and equitable for individuals who are underrepresented in academia? Do you have the ability to engage in critical dialogue and conversations about race and gender equity and how we can work toward removing discriminatory structures in academia? We are looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Director who has experience working closely with students, developing and managing programs and events, evaluating and reporting on program impact, writing and updating content for website and other communication channels, facilitating conversations about best practices related to equity and inclusion in higher education and/or STEM, and engaging with partners within Stanford University as well as outside the institution. The Assistant Director will take the lead in overseeing the SURGE Scholars program, while also developing and implementing our retention and inclusion community activities such as the Dean's Grad Scholars program and DEI liaisons program. Reporting to the Director and working closely with the Associate Dean for DEI and the diversity recruitment program manager, the Assistant Director will provide support in developing, implementing, and administrating School's DEI vision and goals to make the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability (SDSS) a more diverse and inclusive community for students, staff, and faculty.
Your Responsibilities will Include*:
- Oversee and implement SURGE Scholars program and work with diversity recruitment manager on programmatic activities, including budget, publicity, recruitment, applications, faculty match, alumni network, and program evaluation and reporting.
- Collaborate and act as liaison with DEI partners in SDSS departments, programs and institutes to implement graduate student and postdoctoral initiatives related to recruitment and inclusion efforts (e.g., Grad Day, PRISM, Dean's Grad Scholars, DEI liaisons, university recruitment visits, and community events) and report on program impact.
- Grow and manage day-to-day activities of the Respectful Community program and other internal community events including curriculum/workshop development, marketing material design, event and participant management, budget, and program evaluation.
- Support and facilitate critical dialogues about DEI praxis, understanding the intersectionality of identities and social experience, anti-bias training, and other best practices with School community members.
- Work with Director and partners across school to embed inclusive practices within field and outreach programs, faculty mentoring programs, graduate and postdoctoral professional development, etc.
- Create and update DEI content for website, brochures, recruitment and retention materials to distribute through various Stanford communications channels, including email list and social media.
- Develop and deliver training of graduate students, postdocs, and staff as recruiters at key national conferences, target campuses, etc.
- With the Director, devise and communicate strategies for recruitment and inclusion in collaboration with partners in departments and programs.
- Assist the Director, Associate Deans and DEI committees in long-range planning with program insights, literature reviews, data collection and analysis, reporting, etc. Contribute to and inform program planning and ongoing development.
- Assist Director with grant management administration and with monitoring DEI office budget and expense accounting.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities*:
- Ability to develop and market programming with partners across campus
- Data-drive and experience with evaluating programmatic impact and preparing reporting
- Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
- Ability to oversee and direct student staff
- Experience with managing budgets and developing financial plans.
In addition, our preferred abilities include:
- An advanced degree in geosciences or engineering is a plus
- Prior work experience in a higher education setting related to admissions, recruitment, retention and inclusion DEI initiatives. Demonstrated ability to engage and advise a diverse student population.
- Ability to produce engaging and consistent communication and marketing materials to broad audience.
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative while managing multiple and changing priorities.
- Commitment to teamwork and strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Cultural sensitivity and knowledge of issues affecting a wide range of persons, including issues of disparities in educational background, family education history, class, race, gender, age, disability, sexuality, and immigration status.
