Job Summary: | The University of Wisconsin-Madison, College of Engineering (CoE) seeks a dynamic, student-centered and detailed-oriented professional to serve as the Engineering Undergraduate Learning Center (ULC) Manager.
The Engineering ULC Manager is integral to the operations of ULC programs and collaborates across the college and campus to build, support, and promote these programs. This position oversees one of the largest learning support programs on campus that provides peer-led academic support for over 50 STEM courses. In collaboration with CoE staff, this position also oversees required math study tables for LEED (Leaders in Engineering Excellence and Diversity) students and works closely with IEDE (Inclusion Equity and Diversity in Engineering student center) to support under-represented students. Working closely with students, this position hires, trains, supervises, and provides on-going support for the ULC tutors ensuring reliable, high-quality services to CoE undergraduates. Additionally, this position meets with engineering students regarding academics and navigating life challenges as an engineering student.

Responsibilities: | Provides supplemental instruction for students enrolled in classroom, online, and/or laboratory course(s), and assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning and promote high-impact practices. - 5% Works to develop and/or design curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction within that discipline
- 5% Assesses learner performance and may prepare reports recommending instructional improvements
- 10% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of said instructional techniques
- 5% Provides supplemental instruction for students enrolled in classroom, online, and/or laboratory courses in a variety of formats such as one-on-one sessions, group sessions, peer mentor sessions, and seminars
- 5% Meets with students for intake and general assessment and makes referrals to others on campus as appropriate
- 25% May supervise the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support
- 25% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
- 5% May participate in strategic planning and grant proposals for instructional development, new teaching methods, and program direction
- 10% Creates welcoming and inclusive environments and programming for all students. Develops equity, inclusion, and diversity training for tutors. Oversees supplemental instruction programs to support under-represented students.
- 5% Supports CoE student services programming for prospective and current students. Leverages relationships with CoE and University learning support, UHS counselors and other student services partners to serve CoE students

Education: | Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
One degree required in engineering, counseling, higher education, physical/natural sciences or related field. |
Qualifications: | Required: - A minimum of 2 years of higher education student services, administration, or program management experience, or direct STEM teaching/tutoring experience with additional program management experience. - A minimum of 2 years of working closely with student employees, with proven ability to mentor students and relate to engineering undergraduates, being empathetic while also upholding high standards. - Proven record of high-quality direct service to students in one or more of the following areas: academic support, retention programs for underrepresented students, teaching at the college level, academic advising, career advising, academic policy, or academic outreach. - Knowledge of and commitment to employing best practices in inclusive teaching, tutoring and active and blended learning, and a high degree of cultural sensitivity and awareness in working with students from first generation, underrepresented, transfer, and other targeted populations. - Knowledge of and commitment to facilitating peer learning in inclusive environments. - Understanding of the challenges encountered by students at a large university, particularly students struggling in math and science courses. - Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated commitment to and experience working in collaboration with students, faculty, and staff of diverse ethnicities, cultures, social and economic backgrounds. - Ability to manage, prioritize and advance multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously. - Proven ability to execute multiple tasks in a well-organized, detailed-oriented, and timely manner. - Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred: - Understanding of the engineering profession and engineering curricula, awareness of the rigorous academic requirements of engineering coursework. - Knowledge of and experience with academic support services for STEM majors at the college level. - Knowledge of and experience with SIS, Advisor Gateway, student records and other student data. |
