The Organization
At Thrive Scholars, our goal is to see talented economically disadvantaged BIPOC students develop inter-generational wealth and financial security, and become the diverse corporate, civic, and academic leaders our country so desperately needs.
Our comprehensive, data-driven, high-touch program model focuses on the key inflection points that can be the difference between just graduating from any college, and graduating from a top college with the grades, degree, career skills, and network needed to thrive in any career. Over our six-year program, Scholars benefit from admissions and intensive academic preparation before college and a comprehensive set of academic, personal, social-emotional, financial, and career supports throughout college.
The Program
On-Ramp brings together 50 rising 11th grade Black male scholars for an intensive six-week residential program. During the program, On-Ramp scholars will participate in two college-level courses, where students learn the quantitative and writing skills they need to excel in college and in their preferred majors, with additional time devoted to personal and professional development topics. Outside of class, students plan all kinds of activities, including group-wide discussions, field games, college tours, and excursions.
The Position
Thrive Scholars is looking for faculty who will design and teach a challenging six-week seminar course for On-Ramp students. Through topical exploration of their respective disciplines, faculty will introduce students to critical thinking, academic reading and writing. Scholars will gain experience creating unique arguments in their analytical writing (rather than merely reporting or commenting on others’ ideas). Scholars will leave the course more confident in their preparedness to succeed on written assignments in college. Applicants should have a track record of excellent teaching and either an advanced degree or a history of exemplary cultural work or intellectual production. Successful proposals often employ interdisciplinary approaches and creative pedagogical methods.
Details
The faculty will be supported by a TA (advanced graduate student or faculty) to support classroom instruction and facilitate other student activities. Instructors can nominate a graduate student with the requisite skills and background to apply for our summer staff position; otherwise an assistant will be provided by Thrive Scholars.
Course Expectations
-
Students are mostly interested in courses that provide an onramp into a particular issue or topic.
-
Course content and delivery is designed for learners who are ready to be intellectually challenged, but might not have all the building blocks of a more experienced scholar.
-
Homework, projects, papers, or other assignments are designed to enhance a scholar’s college preparedness, with the required skills to produce end of course work scaffolded by the course.
-
Course modules include a variety of teaching modalities, provide a mixture of lecture, small group work and discussion, skills workshops, varied forms of active engagement, and acquaint scholars with the rich resources available on campus.
-
Outside of class work is engaging, pointed, and directly connected to in-class learning. Students should spend at least an hour preparing for each class meeting.
-
At the end of the term, instructors provide each student with a formal written evaluation of their growth and recommendations for further pre-college preparation.
Compensation and Duties
Each instructor will receive a stipend of $15,450 for program preparation, six weeks of instruction (five days a week at 12-15 hours per week),weekly office hours, a general program review, and substantial written evaluations of all participating students. Room and board will be provided, and covered by Thrive Scholars, for non-local faculty and TAs.
Required Application Materials
1. A CV including a complete list of courses taught or other pedagogical experiences.
2. A teaching statement, including:
-
300-600 words about your teaching philosophy, focusing on your experience and philosophy for teaching a classroom that is diverse in race, gender, class, educational background, etc.
-
Short (200-300 words) narrative descriptions of 1 - 2 classes that you are able to offer. Descriptions should include the course title, main themes, titles of 3 key readings, and descriptions of 1-2 assignments.
If the committee finds a fit, we will contact you about arranging an interview in Spring 2023. Please direct any inquiries to creid@thrivescholars.org
