The Organization
At Thrive Scholars, our goal is to see talented economically disadvantaged BIPOC students develop inter-generational wealth and financial security, and become the diverse corporate, civic, and academic leaders our country so desperately needs.
Our comprehensive, data-driven, high-touch program model focuses on the key inflection points that can be the difference between just graduating from any college, and graduating from a top college with the grades, degree, career skills, and network needed to thrive in any career. Over our six-year program, Scholars benefit from admissions and intensive academic preparation before college and a comprehensive set of academic, personal, social-emotional, financial, and career supports throughout college.
The Program
As rising high-school seniors, and rising college first-years, students attend our six-week Summer Academy. At its core, Summer Academy (SA) is an academic boot camp where students learn the quantitative and writing skills they need to excel in college and in their preferred majors, with additional time devoted to personal and professional development topics. Summer Academy is a residential program held on the campuses of Amherst College and the University of Chicago. This year, we will serve 500+ students combined at both sites.
The Position (at Amherst)
We are seeking multiple Writing Professors to each teach one writing section of approximately 20-25 students, focused on helping our Scholars further develop the writing skills they will need to excel in any subject area at a selective college. The course will meet between 12-15 hours per week, and will include a combination of professor-led instruction and opportunities for students to engage in hands-on and collaborative work. Course will include:
-
Writing I held at Amherst College for rising high school seniors, which will focus on bridging the knowledge and skills of students to the many different forms of writing, research, and thinking they will engage in college courses across disciplines.
Additional Courses (at University of Chicago)
-
Writing II held at University of Chicago for rising first-year college STEM students, with some focus on technical writing.
-
Writing II held at the University of Chicago for rising first-year college Non-STEM students, with some focus on research writing.
The Writing Professor will be supported by two TAs, who may be graduate students or college faculty that the Writing Professor selects, with approval from Thrive Scholars staff or Thrive can support with identifying a TA, if needed. The Professor and TAs are expected to be present for the entirety of the course time each day, and available for a minimum of 2 hours of office hours during the week.
The Writing Professor and TAs will be expected to participate in an orientation, and the professor will be expected to participate in course planning before the program begins. Faculty and TAs will also be accountable for meeting shared learning outcomes and measurements, while still being able to maintain autonomy over instruction and day to day coursework.
Salary: The Writing Professor will be paid $15,450
Housing: Room and board will be provided, and covered by Thrive Scholars, for non-local faculty and assistant instructors.
Qualifications and Experience:
-
Experience teaching writing in a selective college setting required
-
Experience teaching and engaging high school students
-
Passion for and experience in working with a diverse, underserved community of high school and rising college students
-
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
