(Life/Physical Science Graduate Student)
SA 2 (University of Chicago) Dates: Sunday, July 2nd - Saturday, August 12th
The Organization
At Thrive Scholars, our goal is to see talented economically disadvantaged BIPOC students develop inter-generational wealth and financial security, and become the diverse corporate, civic, and academic leaders our country so desperately needs.
Our comprehensive, data-driven, high-touch program model focuses on the key inflection points that can be the difference between just graduating from any college, and graduating from a top college with the grades, degree, career skills, and network needed to thrive in any career. Over our six-year program, Scholars benefit from admissions and intensive academic preparation before college and a comprehensive set of academic, personal, social-emotional, financial, and career supports throughout college.
The Program
As rising high school seniors and rising college first-years, students attend our six-week Summer Academy. At its core, Summer Academy is an academic boot camp where students learn the quantitative and writing skills they need to excel in college and in their preferred majors, with additional time devoted to personal and professional development topics. Summer Academy is a residential program held on the campus of the University of Chicago. This year, we expect to serve 200+ students.
The Position
Thrive Scholars is looking to recruit multiple Life or Physical Science Graduate Students to teach a course of approximately 20-25 students, focused on helping our Scholars learn safety protocols and methods, gain exposure and confidence with lab equipment and instruments, and develop the skills they will need to excel in courses at a selective college. The course will meet about 6 hours per day for one week, and will include a combination of professor-led instruction and opportunities for students to engage in hands-on and collaborative work.
The Graduate Student Instructor will be supported by one Assistant Instructor, who may be undergraduate or graduate students, with approval from Thrive Scholars staff. The instructor and Assistant Instructors are expected to be present for the entirety of the course time each day, and available for a minimum of 1 hour of office hours during the week.
The Instructor will be expected to participate in an orientation and in course planning before the program begins. Faculty and TAs will also be accountable for meeting shared learning outcomes and measurements, while still being able to maintain autonomy over instruction and day to day coursework.
Salary: The Graduate Student Instructor will be paid $6,000 and the Assistant Instructors will be paid $2,000 for the Summer.
Housing: Room and board will be provided, and covered by Thrive Scholars, for non-local faculty and assistant instructors.

Biology and wet lab experience, preferred
