Summary of Duties:

Our new colleague will teach one undergraduate course cross-listed with the School of Environment, the Agricultural and Food Systems (AFS) Degree Program, and American Indian Studies; and one graduate course in their area of expertise. The successful candidate will develop a community-based research and outreach program, advise graduate students, and pursue internal and external funding. It is expected that the successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to supporting first-generation and BIPOC student populations and participate in university service activities that advance the mission of the cluster hire to build a more diverse, equitable, accessible, and inclusive university community.

Required Qualifications:

• Earned Ph.D. in a field related to the study of Native American food systems and the environment such as Native American studies, environmental studies/science, sociology, anthropology, agroecology, ecology, nutrition, or public policy at time of hire; and
  
• At least one year (12 months) of academic or community-based research experience related to the food systems of Indigenous communities in North America
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Evidence of ability to conduct high quality research;
  
• Evidence of potential to conduct high quality extension and outreach;
  
• Evidence of potential to successfully teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students;
  
• Demonstrated focus on food sovereignty as it relates to members of Indigenous communities;
  
• Demonstrated cultural competency in Indigenous environmental perspectives;
  
• Demonstrated expertise in community-based participatory research approaches;
  
• Demonstrated expertise in Indigenous research methodologies that respect traditional protocols for community engagement and ethical use of Indigenous knowledge;
  
• Background in varied qualitative or quantitative methodological approaches; and
  
• Evidence of potential to acquire internal or external research funding.

THE SCHOOL OF THE ENVIRONMENT is a unique cross-college academic unit located in both the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The SoE integrates research, teaching, and outreach programs across disciplines aimed at understanding and sustaining Earth systems. We apply disciplinary tools within novel frameworks to develop knowledge and citizens for a sustainable future. Our 38 faculty, ~100 graduate students, and ~500 undergraduates work together from multiple campuses across Washington state.
