Founded by Maria Bowen Chapin in 1901, The Chapin School is an all-girls Kindergarten through grade 12 independent day school located in New York City’s Upper East Side neighborhood, dedicated to the intellectual and personal growth of young women. All Chapin students attend school under one roof, creating a unique sense of continuity and community. Here, students benefit from some of the finest, state-of-the-art facilities in New York including a two-story library with a multimedia room, leading-edge science laboratories, art and music studios, a black box theater, computer laboratories, a design and innovation lab, and a greenhouse. In May 2021, the School’s campaign contributed to significant enhancements to the campus with the expansion of three new floors featuring a performing arts center, gymnasium, fitness center, suspended track, locker rooms, offices, and a training room. The Head of the Middle School oversees the Middle School program (grades 4-7) by providing instructional and organizational leadership to the faculty in the Middle School division, monitoring the academic and personal growth of each student, and promoting and supporting the professional growth of the faculty. The Head of the Middle School builds and maintains relationships with students, teachers, and parents in order to sustain a vibrant educational community that supports the mission of the school. Job Overview
The Head of Middle School oversees the Middle School program by providing instructional and organizational leadership to the faculty and staff in the Middle School division, monitoring the academic and personal growth of each student and promoting and supporting the professional growth of the faculty and staff. The Head of Middle School along with the Associate Head of Middle School builds and maintains relationships with students, teachers, and parents in order to sustain a vibrant educational community that supports the mission of the school.
Chapin’s next Middle School Division Head will be:
A school leader who demonstrates a commitment to tradition and innovation, and interdisciplinary curriculum development who
- Works closely with the Director of Academic Program and academic department heads on the development of curriculum that reflects Chapin’s mission and promotes Chapin’s strategic initiatives
- Ensures that the academic class schedule for Middle School supports the academic program and advances academic initiatives;
- Creates a program that meets the needs of students in grades 4-7 while maintaining K-12 alignment especially for the transition points (3-4 and 7-8);
A student-centered educator who values each student’s voice and experience who
- Works with the Head of the Student Learning Support Department to assess programmatic needs and individual student progress, and to initiate recommendations as necessary;
- Partners with the Admissions department in interviewing and screening all Middle School applicants;
- Works with members of Counseling Services to monitor individual and group social/emotional needs
- Supervises and meets regularly with the Class Coordinators as a group and individually to monitor the progress of each class and individual students;
- Ensures the success of the Middle School Advisory program;
An educational leader who actively cultivates a student, faculty and staff community of belonging by
- Hiring, supervising and evaluating all Middle School faculty and staff;
- Creating an agenda for leading weekly division meetings with MS faculty and staff;
- Supervising the MS Community Service/Service-Learning Coordinator;
- Meeting regularly with the Middle School members of the Department of Equitable Practices;
A partner to colleagues, students and parents by
- Overseeing all grades, comments, and related communications with parents, in both written reports and during scheduled conferences;
- Collaborating with colleagues and parents to support students experiencing disciplinary or social issues;
- Partnering with the Chief Finance & Operations Officer (CFOO) to prepare and manage the annual budget for the division;
- Supervising the Assistant to the Head of Middle School and the Associate Head of Middle School, ensuring smooth administrative operation of the division;
- Serving on the Senior Administrative Team to review policies, and to develop and implement strategic initiatives;
- Collaborating with the Parents' Association, leading parent meetings and parent education workshops, and communicating regularly with the parent body.
