Purpose Statement
The ideal candidate will be an experienced, versatile, and accomplished high school teacher who can teach a variety of courses, serve as a mentor to a small group of students, moderate a co-curricular activity, and participate in high school activities that support the divisional program. The candidate will be experienced in numerous modalities of instruction in which learning is academically rigorous as well as engaging, dynamic, differentiated, and communication-based. During this exciting time of growth at SD, we are searching for well-rounded, versatile team players who will ensure that our students acquire the essential skills to be successful in school, and in life.
This is a full-time position in the Social Studies Department and is responsible for teaching a broad range of courses from Global Studies to Psychology.
Responsibilities of an Upper School Social Studies Teacher
The School’s faculty strives to set for its students an example of high ethical standards, moral behavior, and devotion to excellence. This responsibility involves the following:
- To maintain a climate of trust and mutual respect which encourages students to take educated risks, ask informed questions, develop and share intelligent opinions, and make mistakes necessary to learn.
- To offer students clear educational objectives for each course supported by appropriate assignments, activities and evaluation.
- To accurately assess each student’s progress and inform the student, the parents, the academic mentor, and the appropriate administrator immediately of any serious difficulty.
- To show concern for and nurture the student’s intellectual, social, emotional, and ethical development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in history or other related subject
- 3 years minimum previous experience teaching at the high school or college level
- Proficiency with technology
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in related subject or education; Single Subject Teaching Credential – History (all states accepted)
- Previous experience teaching any or all of the following: World History, History, sociology or psychology.
- Previous experience working with international students
- Experience teaching with iPads
- Experience using Canvas or other LMS
