If you love working with students to develop the skills of research, analysis, and synthesis, close reading of texts, and effective communication in writing and in speech, this position may be right for you! We are looking for teachers who are focused on helping students read texts more critically, become more convincing and eloquent writers, and appreciate the ways that literature can illuminate the human condition. And we are looking for colleagues who embrace creative curriculum design, inquiry-based pedagogy, experiential learning, and collaboration with colleagues as valued aspects of their teaching. The Humanities Department (combining History & Social Sciences and English) represents the school's commitment to interdisciplinary thinking and the Humanities as a core element of the curriculum. This is an exciting time to be a member of the Ransom Everglades Humanities department. The English department faculty recently engaged in a comprehensive redesign of the curriculum, and we are creating more opportunities for student research and creative writing. Faculty members in the Humanities department may serve as faculty mentors for independent study projects and Bowden Fellowships in the Humanities. If you are eager to join a faculty that values inquiry-based, student-centered learning, a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and contribute to the life of the school, this might be a great position for you. Prior independent school teaching is preferred. A Master's degree in a field within, or closely related to, Literature or the Humanities, and comfort using the Microsoft Suite and G Suite platforms, are required.
While the search committee will entertain applications from candidates of all backgrounds, candidates who can contribute experience and expertise in the following areas are especially encouraged to apply:
British Literature: The junior year British Literature curriculum combines canonical studies of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Conrad with contemporary literature such as Wide Sargasso Sea and White Tiger, and focused on the development of advanced writing skills. Renaming the course “Research into Anglophone Literature,” department members are taking a fresh look at the curriculum and reinventing the definition and place of “British Literature” in our course of study. The faculty is revising the longstanding “research paper,” exploring what research skills are needed by students, and what outcomes are most meaningful and relevant in the third decade of the 21st century.
American Literature: Titled “American Literary Movements,” the sophomore English course explores American literature in a cultural and historical context, and emphasizes close reading of the texts along with continued development of research and writing skills. For 2022-23, a new team-taught, two-period, two-credit course, “Advanced American Studies” is offered to sophomores who have a particular interest and talent in the humanities. Using cultural studies as a framework for the study of literature and history, this course replaces AP US History; students will be supported in preparing for the AP US History and AP English Language exams if they are so inclined to take those tests.
World Literature: The freshman year World Literature course, now called “Forms of Literature,” is organized thematically around concepts such as the real and the ideal and man’s relationship with nature, and includes a range of genres and voices, from Tang era poems to contemporary novels and stories from Latin American and the Caribbean. Department members are taking a fresh look at the curriculum and thinking hard about creating an inclusive, culturally competent curriculum.
Digital Humanities: The department recognizes the need for novel approaches to the study of history and literature. Candidates with skills and interests in any of the following will be given strong consideration: digital and computational humanities; text technologies /media archaeologies; emerging media forms; cultural analytics/computational methods for interpretation; digital media studies; critical computation and coding; spatial and geohumanities, mapping, and GIS; data visualization; ethical and sociopolitical dimensions of digital technologies; and leveraging digital tools and data for civic engagement, equity, and justice.
Speech and Debate: Ransom Everglades is home to a burgeoning speech and debate program with a national reputation for excellence that engages more than 130 upper school students. While we are unlikely to hire another faculty member dedicated exclusively to speech and debate, candidates in other disciplines with experience and interest in speech and debate will be given strong consideration.
To Apply, submit:
- a completed employment application
