Job Summary: The Executive Director of Academic Outreach for the Office of Teaching Innovation and Digital Education represents the Associate Provost internally and externally, to promote the development of University outreach programs, with major responsibility for extending University of Alabama degree programs beyond the traditional campus program.
Additional Department Summary: The Executive Director of Online and Continuing Education is the principal leader for the University of Alabama’s online and continuing education enterprise. Reports to the Associate Provost for the Office of Teaching Innovation and Digital Education (OTIDE). Develops, markets, implements, and directs all distance learning activities for University’s online degree programs and continuing education portfolio.
OTIDE provides high-quality, student-centered educational opportunities to adult learners through various modalities. The Executive Director provides strategic vision, direction, leadership, and focused goals for program innovation and takes a student-centered approach in developing, planning, and implementing initiatives to advance online education at the University.
Understands the evolving needs of online students. Leads a team of directors and departments in assessing, analyzing, and addressing the educational and professional needs of diverse populations of learners. Works closely with University faculty and administration to identify, develop, and deliver innovative, scalable, and flexible online program offerings, engage adult students, and enhance enrollment, learning, and graduation outcomes. Provides strategic oversight of program development, marketing, recruitment, orientation, advising, enrollment management, student services, retention and graduation, instructional design, course development, technical support, military services, curricular planning, state authorization, customized training, credentialing, and program evaluation. Provides highly responsive, adaptive, and complex professional support to various constituents throughout the University, community, and beyond.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and ten (10) years of experience to include administering academic outreach, distance learning, and continuing education programs, working with non-traditional audiences, managing comprehensive online academic programs, managing budgets, and effective personnel supervision; OR Master's degree and eight (8) years of experience to include administering academic outreach, distance learning, and continuing education programs, working with non-traditional audiences, managing comprehensive online academic programs, managing budgets, and effective personnel supervision.
Skills and Knowledge: Advanced knowledge in strategic development and delivery of distance academic programs. Expertise in supervising instructional design, rich media production, interactive technologies, and technical support services associated with digital learning (digital and mass media marketing and promotion of distance programs using innovative and emerging practices). Expertise in developing and managing student service programming for non-traditional and distance students including recruitment, advising, retention programs. Expertise in compliance and accreditation experience including state authorization and SACSCOC. Knowledge of student information system. Knowledge of campus resources student account services, Federal Financial Aid. Expertise in innovative prospect management and CRM strategies. Effective relationship building skills with faculty, academic leaders, campus staff, industry, and community partners. Strong interpersonal, managerial, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree or higher in higher education, business, arts and sciences, or other relevant field and ten (10) years of progressively responsible work experience in administering academic outreach and distance education programs and services. Successful record of managing programs that require an organization to be fully self-sustaining in terms of revenue generation. Direct experience working with state authorization requirements for operating distance degree programs in all 50 states.
