Job Purpose | The Outreach and Public Programming Coordinator works closely with the Executive Director of the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture and the Manager of Archival Services to develop and direct thematic and historical outreach and public programs at the Avery Research Center. The coordinator is responsible for all issues concerning public programs, including marketing and communications. This position fosters and maintains mutually beneficial programming between the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture and other College of Charleston departments committed to promoting/supporting Avery’s mission, which is to collect, preserve, and promote the unique history and culture of the African diaspora. The coordinator promotes and co-facilitates all campus outreach activities including student, faculty, and community workshops and lectures (co)sponsored by the Avery Research Center. This position encourages interest in and use of Avery resources via workshops and partnerships with key community organizations. The coordinator designs and implements a comprehensive marketing and communications plan for the Avery Research Center to increase awareness and use of the Avery Research Center services and materials. The plan would also increase participation in Avery-sponsored programs. |
Minimum Requirements | Bachelor’s degree. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply. |
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | Excellent communication skills. Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Must be self-motivated. Ability to teach/train/supervise small cohort of student interns and assistants. Working knowledge of WordPress and social media. Ability to work independently and with limited supervision. |

Activity | Works closely with the Avery archivists, along with the College Libraries and Academic Departments and programs to develop innovative formal programming for campus and community members. Works closely with the Facilities, Outreach, and Public Programming Manager to develop public programs including lectures, symposia, and workshops that showcase Avery’s research projects and growing archival material. Plans and manages major Avery public events each semester for the campus and local communities. Manages complex logistics including collaborating with local and regional community partners and other colleges and universities throughout the southeast. |
