Departmental Overview
The UC Botanical Garden is a unit of the Berkeley Natural History Museums administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. The Garden's broad mission is to develop and maintain a diverse collection of plants in support of the University's missions in teaching and worldwide research in plant biology. Additional major roles include conservation of plant diversity and promoting public understanding and appreciation of plants and the natural environment, through many Garden activities, including through a diverse array of public education programs University of California, Berkeley.

Responsibilities
- Serves as the lead development professional for the Botanical Garden. Identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards major gift prospects and donors and develops and manages a dynamic portfolio to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects for gifts in the agreed upon range, with an emphasis on bringing to the attention of the Executive Director new, potential, major donors. May include corporate and foundation prospects.
- Working with Garden staff writes or supervises the writing of proposals using convincing arguments for solicitation of individual, corporate, and / or foundation prospects. Creates a win-win scenario for the garden and prospects.
- Plans, organizes, and directs fundraising campaign strategies which include multiple components.
- Oversees the work of professional and support staff involved in the implementation of multicomponent fundraising programs as well as the Botanical Garden membership and marketing programs. Ensures that all development activities are communicated through a highly visible networking/social media/online presence.
- Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met and implements program activities to achieve these goals.
- Analyzes needs and assists in the implementation of strategic plans for fundraising and other advancement programs.
- With the Director as the point of initial; contact, facilitates and cultivates activities with the Advisory Board.
- Evaluates programs using financial feasibility studies and market research, including planning and evaluating annual solicitation programs and making recommendations for improvements.
- Attends functions, meetings and serves on internal / external committees as a representative of the Botanical Garden.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Advanced working knowledge of and/or ability to learn all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education / healthcare generally.
- Advanced working knowledge of and/or ability to learn about the location, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
- Advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
- Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Ability to make persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.
- Advanced organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification / avoidance / resolution, and strong project management skills.
- Very strong skills in maintaining confidentiality.
- Development/Fundraising: Proven success in development for a large nonprofit. Experience running capital campaigns and success fundraising from multiple donor channels.
- Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers/board of directors.
- Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones.
- Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising. Ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials. Experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences.
- Influencing: Gets others to accept ideas by using convincing arguments, creates a win-win situation and responds appropriately to key stakeholders.
- Collaboration: Effective at working with others to reach common goals and objectives.
- Relationship Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization and externally.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $125,000.00 - $146,800.00.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
- 1 day per week remote capability is a possibility after an initial period of only in-the-office work.
