McDonogh School is searching for a dynamic English and social studies teacher in the eighth grade. The ideal candidate will help students grow, think deeply, make connections, embrace diverse perspectives, engage in meaningful learning, and develop understanding of culture and humanity. Essential Functions
- Inspire, engage, and encourage students in the study of English and history as they develop as readers, writers, critical thinkers, and effective researchers
- Serve as an advisor; contributing to the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth of adolescents
- Work collaboratively with colleagues both inside and outside the Humanities departments
- Use professional growth opportunities to continually refine practice
- Respond to the needs of the School, including but not limited to, service learning, coaching, assigned duties, and other areas as determined by the Middle School Head
Bachelor’s Degree in English or Social Studies; or a teaching degree in secondary education with an emphasis in English, Social Studies, or Language Arts required.
Additional Experience
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and create engaging interdisciplinary units, projects, and/or willingness to research historical (or any other related subject area) topics to be able to create interdisciplinary units
- Experience working in a student-centered learning environment, with practical experience with problem- and project-based learning, as well as integrated learning
- Prior experience teaching middle school language arts
- Prior experience teaching social studies or humanities
- Understanding of grammar and mechanics

Working Conditions
Evening and weekend hours may be required from time to time. Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions. Lifting up to 25 pounds. Other working conditions include climbing stairs, walking around campus, sitting, standing, and significant computer use including extensive close use of a computer monitor. Reaching, grasping. Stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling.
