Job Description:
The Director of Artward Bound (AB) at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) will lead the strategic vision and implementation of all aspects of the program. Artward Bound is a four-year, grant funded program that prepares Boston area high school students for acceptance to and success in higher/post-secondary education, and beyond. Artward Bound students come from communities under-represented in art and design schools. AB seeks to increase the success of BIPOC youth (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) in higher education and to make art and design fields more inclusive.
The Director of Artward Bound will provide strategic leadership, secure funding, manage budgets and hiring, lead curriculum development, cultivate and support external/internal partnerships, and supervise staff to ensure effective program operation and success.
REPORTS TO: Dean of Justice, Equity and Transformation
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision of Artward Bound staff and students, including benefited staff.
SALARY: $75,000 - $85,000 - Commensurate with experience
Position is governed by the APA collective bargaining agreement

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Program Leadership + Management
- Provide leadership, direction and supervision to ensure the effective operation of Artward Bound.
- Ensure an environment that facilitates the achievement of equitable and accessible youth development outcomes
- Develop and implement responsive artistic and academic curricular development practices in academics, arts, and social development
- Steward resources to ensure growth and support of youth-centered programming, services, and activities
- Identify and develop opportunities for internal and external collaborations / partnerships relevant for AB's growth and sustainability.
- Ensure establishment of and adherence to policies and procedures
Supervisory
- Evaluate staff performance across program areas and content responsibilities
- Provide professional development for administrative staff, instructors, and mentors to increase student outcomes and engagement
Communications + Public Relations
- Nurture relationships, advise, and maintain communication with Artward Bound students and parents/guardians/caregivers to maximize success and retention.
- Cultivate and nurture relationships with Boston Public Schools (BPS)
- Develop strategic alliances with community schools, leaders, and local officials
- Develop collaborative partnerships with community-based youth serving organizations
- Increase visibility of Artward Bound and youth pathways locally, regionally, and nationally
- Develop and oversee positive messaging campaigns in collaboration with AB's Design Specialist/Content Creator
Program Evaluation + Presentation
- Oversee comprehensive data-driven evaluation of program
- Collaborate with Assistant Director to to evolve curriculum, student/family engagement, and professional development for AB staff
- Direct robust recruitment strategies for AB students throughout BPS
Fiscal Stewardship
- Create, and monitor annual budget to ensure effective management of resources
- Collaborate with financial management staff from Administration & Finance, Institutional Advancement, and the MassArt Foundation.
- Lead / support fundraising, including grant writing and reporting
- Funder cultivation; spokesperson for donor visits
- Develop and implement financial strategies and cost-share opportunities to support accessible pathways to and through MassArt
- Provide financial updates / reports to leadership

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in art education, arts administration, K12 education or related field
- Minimum of three years administration experience at a leadership level
- Minimum of two years experience with fundraising, grant writing, and/or donor cultivation
- Demonstrated supervisory experience
- Experience with budget development and fiscal management
- Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational, management, and problem solving skills
- Experienced facilitator
- Demonstrated ability to navigate complex relationships among diverse constituencies
- Work experience with college readiness and/or mentorship program(s)
- Experience working with the academic needs of future and current first-generation college students
- Must have a deep appreciation for, and ability to relate to, high school students / young people from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds
- Knowledge of positive youth development practices
- Appreciation for the power of art/design to transform our world
- Proficiency with Google suite
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in art education, arts administration and K12 education, or related field
- Experience with professional development facilitation
- Experience with curriculum design appropriate for high school learners
- Demonstrated experience in assessment/data collection and use of metrics to impact program outcomes
- Three (3+) plus years K12 teaching experience
- Knowledge of current practices in contemporary and/or community arts
- Fluency in Spanish
- Valid driver's license
WORKING CONDITIONS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee will be supervising programs that have a different schedule from academic year after school (Sept-May) and summer full day programming (June-August) and will need to be flexible to attend evening, early morning and weekend events where appropriate. The employee is also expected to be on-call where appropriate. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
