Title: GIS Analyst and Research Fellow, Shi Institute
Full-Time, Temporary; June 1, 2023: End Date: July 30, 2024 with opportunity for renewal (28 months maximum)

Function:
The Center for Applied Sustainability Research (CASR) aims to develop a deeper understanding of the critical links between environmental, social, and economic systems. We focus on applied systems research projects aimed at creative solutions to promote healthier and more equitable communities, more sustainable economies, and more resilient built and natural systems. The Post-Baccalaureate Fellow will collaborate on projects related to environmental justice, resilience, and effective communication of sustainability challenges and solutions.
Responsibilities:
Utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other data visualization tools to analyze a variety of sustainability issues and propose equitable and environmentally-viable solutions.
- Researches methods, best practices, and innovative solutions.
- Documents CASR methodologies.
- Manages and conducts spatial analysis, mapping, and quantitative analysis for community-based research projects.
- Assesses, gathers, and cleans data for analysis and mapping.
- Develops and administers surveys and other qualitative instruments related to community-based research.
- Collaborates with community partners throughout the life-cycle of projects including problem identification, data gathering, analysis, reporting, and data-informed action.
- Shares information in community forums through presentations and community workgroups.
- Fosters and maintains connections with external partners by matching community needs with campus expertise.
- Assists with research administration work such as Institutional Review Board applications, letters of intent, memorandums of understanding, project scoping, and grant writing.
- Assists with building and maintaining web-based mapping platforms and databases.
- Works with faculty, administrators, and staff to plan, coordinate, and present information related to mutual goals or projects- this includes exchanging information, explaining policies and procedures, arranging meetings, presenting to classes, and coordinating documentation.
- Collaborates with faculty from a variety of disciplines and departments.
- Works with students in a mentor role to troubleshoot software and data issues, assist in projects, and provide resources.
- Supervises student fellows as assigned by Shi Institute staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience with GIS and spatial analysis;
- Passion for sustainability and social justice;
- Experience with quantitative research and analysis;
- Ability to collaborate with staff, faculty, and students;
- Knowledge and desire to learn more about spatial analysis, research methods, and campus-community partnerships;
- The ability to thrive in a dynamic learning environment and flexibility in adapting to project changes and challenges;
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to address a diverse range of audiences on- and off-campus;
- An authentic, energetic and collaborative team member;
- Approachable, patient, and compassionate;
- Knowledge of strategic goals of the University and Shi Institute.
Desired Qualifications
Earned bachelor's degree from Furman University;
- Experience with web development and coding (e.g., JavaScript, Python, GeoJSON, D3.js);
- Experience with data cleaning, use of federal datasets, and data storage;
- Experience collaborating with internal and external partners and fostering community relationships;
- Familiarity with image editing software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator) and web-based presentation tools such as Canva.
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, R, DataWrapper, Flourish).
- Experience with qualitative data analysis.
- Familiarity with systems modeling tools (e.g., Stella).
