The Department of Recreational Sports offers members of the UC Berkeley community an extraordinary experience to live active and meaningful lives while on campus.
Programs and services range from group fitness, aquatics, adventure trips, drop-in fitness and recreation, intramural sports, sport clubs, personal training, WorkFit, and many other activities. Recreational Sports is enhanced by its indoor and outdoor facilities, including three indoor locations, four pools, five tennis courts, and an outdoor adventure center at the Berkeley Marina.

- Set up and break down belay and safety systems for all high element Ropes Course events.
- Safety assurance and risk management at the Ropes Course.
- Lead low and high element Ropes Course events for group sizes of 6 to 100+ individuals.
- Periodic equipment and hardware inspections and minor repairs.
- Facilitate ice breakers, initiatives and debriefs for a variety of groups including youth and adult.
- Add to the documentation of new initiatives and enhancement of curriculum on file.
- Attention to detail regarding equipment organization and care.
- Facilitate the increase of knowledge about the natural environment, experiential education theory and practices, group dynamics, weather and equipment care.
- Demonstrate good judgment in regards to participant safety and wellbeing.
- Maintains a supportive environment for program participants and facilitates involvement.
- Interacts with recreational program participants in a positive manner.
- Keeps current on teaching methods, techniques and skills through continuing education and certification.
- Participates in required professional development activities including the attendance of required trainings for team building staff.
- Keeps current on University required trainings.
- Serve as a representative of Cal Adventures.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Well organized, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and mature individual.
- Demonstrated experience serving in a leadership role.
- Ability to facilitate meaningful discussions and debriefs pertinent to client goals and their performance as a group.
- Ability to create an experiential learning environment while teaching a variety of topics.
- Knowledge and demonstration of and/or ability ot learn Leave No Trace ethics.
- Must have leadership, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
- Must have service orientation and program management skills, sound judgment, and creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.
- Must be client service minded with an entrepreneurial spirit.
- Must have highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be proficient in the use of basic computer applications.
- Must have the knowledge of and/or ability to learn campus policies and procedures.
- CPR and First Aid - or the ability to attain these certifications.
- Outdoor Science training and ability to impart knowledge through pre-designed curriculum while on course.
- EMT, Wilderness First Responder, or Wilderness First Aid Certification.
- Past experience leading groups in the wilderness on overnight trips.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $16.99 - $27.00.
- This is a 12-month, 30% part-time (12 hours per week), contract position.
- This position is non-exempt and bi-weekly.
