Departmental Overview

The Lawrence Hall of Science is UC Berkeley's public science center. Our mission is to inspire and engage through science discovery and learning in ways that advance equity and opportunity. We do this by working with audiences that include learners, who experience our programs and products; educators, who work both in and out of school settings; and partners, who conduct research, build capacity for learning, and transform education systems. Research underlies everything we do, and we design all of our programs and products to have high impact beyond the walls of The Lawrence. Since we were founded in 1968, The Lawrence has been at the forefront of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning. The Lawrence is unique among science centers as it is a Learning Lab. We design, develop and study a wide array of science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning programs and products for youth, families and adults from diverse backgrounds in our specialized facilities and through our community partnerships. Our spaces and partnerships offer unique opportunities for public engagement and learning, curriculum and instructional materials design, professional learning, and research on learning, instruction, and pathways towards STEM careers. We disseminate and scale up our effective and innovative learning programs and materials in ways that broaden participation in STEM and have local, national, and global impact.

• Mentor them on a journey of exploration, investigation, discovery, and invention!

The Summer Public Education Specialist position is an ideal opportunity for undergraduate/graduate students with a science-oriented mind and a relationship-oriented personality. In this position you will facilitate fun, engaging, and meaningful hands-on science learning for in-person camps and teen programs at The Lawrence. It is a great opportunity for professional growth and you will gain valuable experience in teaching science, technology, engineering, and math.

Responsibilities

• Develop an understanding of and the ability to facilitate youth programming in a fun, engaging, hands-on environment while supplying accurate scientific information. This may involve further reading or research on a subject or topic.
• Present programs in an energetic, appropriate, and professional way that actively engages participants.
• Manage a learning environment for participants' wellbeing and safety while managing expectations of behaviors.
• Serve as an enthusiastic role model and mentor for youth entering 1 to grade 6.
• Be responsible for material management of individual camp sessions, including appropriate set-up, clean-up, and storage.
• Thoroughly understand the building safety and security and help implement emergency procedures when deemed necessary.
• Adhere to all of the policies and procedures of the Lawrence Hall of Science.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Responsible, organized, and healthy work ethic.
• Strong customer service and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated creative teaching methods in informal or formal learning environments.
• Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree or a post-secondary education program in science, education, youth development, or related field.
• Capable of working independently and collaboratively with an educational team.
• Flexibile and ability to think quickly and adapt.
• Able to lift up to 25 pounds (carts are available).

Salary & Benefits

This is a 3 month (5/19/2023 - 8/15/2023) non-exempt temporary position at 100% (40 hrs a week). This position is paid hourly.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $22.89 - $25.00.

• Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30AM-5:00PM and includes one 45-minute lunch break and one 15-minute break.
