About You
You are an experienced middle school teacher who seeks to share your love of science and interest in design thinking with others. Being a highly energetic and productive self-starter, you demonstrate a love of teaching and thorough command of the subject matter. You have excellent organizational and relationship building skills, are adept at guiding students in the classroom, and support their extracurricular pursuits. You enjoy the rhythm and energy of an independent day school and demonstrate integrity, humor, and sound judgment in everything you do. This role offers you the opportunity to design and implement cutting-edge programming in STEM, STEAM, and design in Dexter Southfield’s new design and makerspace.
To be successful in this role, you must be able to:
- Prepare and deliver lessons to middle school students on topics as outlined in the School’s curriculum
- Engage diverse learners in the design process as part of a project-based learning science curriculum
- Nurture an interest in design thinking and support facility with design tools in our maker space
- Support development of student passion projects in our new maker space
- Develop entrepreneurial and service-based, student-designed projects
- Support learning in the area of computer coding
- Supervise student projects and laboratory work
- Evaluate and grade students' class work, laboratory performance, assignments, and papers
- Compile, administer, and grade examinations
- Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records
- Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts
- Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues in the Middle School and across divisions to address teaching and research issues
- Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with School policies, departmental matters, and academic issues
- Act as an advisor to students and participate in campus and community events
- Fully engage in School-sponsored professional development programs and department meetings
- Remain knowledgeable of instructional and curriculum trends, goals, and objectives
- Coach and/or advise at least two extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs
- Actively support an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, diverse identities and perspectives, and respect for all voices

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in design, engineering, or physical science field.; advanced degree in subject matter preferred
- At least three years of full-time teaching experience, preferably with at least three months of full-time remote teaching experience
- Experience overseeing maker space facilities highly desirable
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer coding and design programs such as CAD or Adobe InDesign
- Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
- Ability to plan, organize, develop, and conduct comprehensive lesson plans and instruction
- Demonstrated knowledge in teaching principles, theories, methods, behavior management techniques, and conflict resolution strategies
- Understanding of academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of middle school students
- Ability to create and contribute to an engaging and inclusive learning environment?and workplace
- History of continued education or professional development
- Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and?adapt to changing work priorities?and assignments??
