Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility facilitates Swarthmore College’s commitment to intellectual rigor, ethical engagement, and social responsibility by connecting the curriculum, campus, and communities, including proximate communities of Chester and Philadelphia; more distant community partners around the country and globe; and the community of scholars and practitioners who share knowledge and best practices regarding ethical action and civic engagement. The Lang Center connects the College’s curricular excellence with engagement in all of those communities using an approach that we identify as Engaged Scholarship.
This position also works with the Office of Sustainability, which supports and inspires the College community to integrate sustainability into all aspects of campus life: teaching, learning, operations, and culture.
The opportunity:
This position will assist the Executive Director of the Lang Center and the Director of Sustainability in implementing College sustainability and engaged scholarship programs. It will collaborate closely with the Office of Sustainability, Environmental Studies, and other campus departments on a variety of activities and initiatives, including (but not limited to) encouraging broader student engagement with sustainability on campus and the continued to development of campus as a living lab for sustainability learning and research, coordinating activities associated with the President’s Sustainability Research Fellowship Program (PSRF), and supporting engaged scholarship work at the intersection of environmental resilience, social justice, and community engagement. There are two open positions for the Sustainability & Engaged Scholarship Fellow, which is a 12-month, limited term, full-time, benefits eligible position with the possibility of one additional year.
Essential responsibilities include:
- Assisting Lang Center and Office of Sustainability staff with project management, research, and general program support for the President’s Sustainability Research Fellowship, Environmental Justice and Community Resilience Program and/or for other programs of the Lang Center and/or Office of Sustainability
- Collaborating with other staff to lead projects to advance campus sustainability and engaged scholarship.
- Providing support with communications, outreach, and campus engagement initiatives in collaboration with Office of Sustainability and lang Center staff
- Supporting and mentoring students in the President’s Sustainability Research Fellowship, Green Advisor program, and internship program.
Who you are:
- You are a recent graduate with a knowledge of (or willingness to learn about) sustainability, environmental justice, engaged scholarship pedagogy and community-based research (CBR) procedures, and local community dynamics.
- You are familiar with Swarthmore College, and in particular, with the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility and its mission of civic education and partnership with local communities and the Office of Sustainability and its mission of integrating sustainability into teaching, learning, research, and operations of the campus.
- You are an excellent collaborator and communicator with skills including knowledge of Word, Excel, e-calendar systems (i.e. Google Calendar), webpage maintenance, and internet proficiency.
- You possess a high degree of professional decorum.
What you bring:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Demonstrated interest in sustainability and environmental justice through previous work, volunteer experience, and/or academic experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills
- Experience with campus sustainability and/or programs offered by the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility.
- Familiarity with Swarthmore’s administrative structures and policies.
