Departmental Overview
Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) is composed of several teams providing support for instructors and researchers at Berkeley. With leadership in their area of expertise, teams coordinate around consultations, resources, tools, and projects across RTL for the broader campus community.

Responsibilities
- Develops and administers cloud platform infrastructure supporting web-based tools and data analytics.
- Designs, implements, and supports advanced cloud-based tools and services that serve as a foundation for a campus-wide data lake, data transformation layer, and data presentation applications.
- Reviews and implements appropriate security protocols and configurations for a continually evolving, multiplex ecosystem.
- Recommends and transforms highly complex manual processes, such as code or infrastructure deployment, to automated and scalable processes.
- Understands and contributes to the creation and maintenance of technical support documents and operational procedures.
- Administers RTL data and software systems that support academic and research efforts.
- Coordinates with RTL and bIT service teams and partners (e.g., SIS, IST, etc) to install, test, and maintain efficient server and network infrastructure for campus learning and research management tools and services.
- Performs advanced systems programming and systems support activities included tasks like UNIX shell scripting.
- Develops scripts and small tools needed to collect, review, and maintain server statistics in support of performance diagnostics, usage trend analysis, and security monitoring.
- Reviews and maintains highly complex security systems for RTL and campus learning and research systems and services.

- Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs.
- Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution.
- Experience with design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning of technology systems.
- Advanced experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.
- Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software.
- Experience leading a team of IT professionals.
- Experience and knowledge of core AWS services --e.g., compute, networking, storage, and database services.
- Experience and knowledge of AWS deployment and management services.
- Experience using the AWS Management Console and the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI)Understanding of the AWS Well-Architected Framework, AWS networking, security services, and the AWS global infrastructure.
- Ability to identify which AWS services meet a given technical requirement and to define technical requirements for AWS-based applications and services.
- Experience building and deploying secure, cloud-based applications, along with continually enhancing best practices for system architecture, tooling, CI/CD, testing, and software deployment.
- Experience administering and optimizing AWS solutions and troubleshooting production issues.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity and experience with writing code in Python
- Experience with docker, particularly docker image building and management.
- Experience maintaining containerized computing environments using Kubernetes.
- Experience with monitoring solutions (such as Prometheus and Grafana).

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $110,000.00 - $120,000.00.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
- This is a remote-friendly position, eligible for 100% remote capability.
