About the Position
The University of Minnesota’s School of Architecture invites applications for a nine-month position in the history and theory of architecture at the level of visiting assistant professor. We seek applicants who specialize in the history of architecture in the postwar period, but other areas of expertise will also be considered. Preference will be given to those whose work addresses one or more of the following areas: histories of social justice and inequality in the built environment, urban/metropolitan design, sustainable design, digital design, global perspectives, and architectural, cultural or social theory. Requirements include a Ph.D. (or ABD) in architectural history or a related field and a record of scholarship.
The successful candidate will participate in undergraduate and M.Arch. programs through teaching architectural history, and contribute to design education, more broadly, through active engagement with contemporary issues in architecture, history and theory. Responsibilities include four courses for the academic year, including elective courses in architectural history and theory at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Appointment Details
This is a 100%-time, nine-month, non-tenure-track appointment at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. The expected start date is August 28, 2023.
Responsibilities
- Teaching core and elective courses in architectural history and theory at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Advising students and serving on honors and graduate students’ committees.
- Developing a strong record of research and publication.
Essential Qualifications
- Ph.D (or ABD) in architectural history or a related field by date of appointment.
- Record of achievement in scholarship.
- Teaching experience {graduate teaching assistant experience accepted].
- Candidates must demonstrate the ability to support the University’s commitment to equity and diversity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, with at least 2 years of experience.
- Attention to cultural diversity in teaching and research.
- Ability to support interdisciplinary initiatives in research and teaching with related fields in the College of Design and across the University.
