Whitfield School, an innovative educational institution for students in grades 6-12, announces an opening for a High School Social Studies Teacher. We are seeking individuals who actively engage with—and learn from—colleagues on a daily basis, thrive on the opportunity to co-create an equitable and inclusive environment for a diverse student body, and apply research-based best practices in their classrooms day in and day out. This position will begin in August 2023. 

The Whitfield School Social Studies Department seeks to help students develop an understanding of the behavior and traditions of societies and cultures of the past and the present. In student-centered classrooms, students explore the experiences of diverse historical actors and study a variety of historical narratives. Over the course of the required 6-year curriculum, students develop foundational reading, writing, and critical thinking skills and learn how to understand, analyze, and evaluate primary and secondary sources. Our goal is for students to have a deeper understanding of their own culture even as they explore cultures other than their own. 

Typical responsibilities include the following: 

• Teach five sections of high school social studies. Specific courses to be determined based on experience and expertise of candidates. 
• Serve as an advisor to approximately 12 high school students. 
• Meet with students during “Academic Lab” time to provide additional support, individualized feedback, and opportunities for extension.
• Work within the department and grade level team to foster a community of kindness, trust, and belonging.
• Work professionally and cooperatively within the department, the School, and the broader Whitfield community.  

In addition to demonstrating a passion for this work, ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in social studies, history, or related field; Master’s or M. Ed. with related BA preferred.
• Two years’ experience teaching high school social studies or history.
• The ability and willingness to teach across a variety of courses, historical eras, and social studies topics is essential.
• A passion for the study and teaching of social studies and history
• Experience teaching historical research and writing
• Background in and commitment to designing and facilitating collaborative, student-centered classes.
• Background in and commitment to culturally responsive teaching
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (oral and written) abilities. 
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues.
• A strong desire to participate in the whole life of the school.
• Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with Google suite and Microsoft Office suite.
