Established in 1970, SVCC is one of the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. The Christanna Campus near Alberta and the John H. Daniel Campus near Keysville serve ten counties and one city - the largest community college service region in the state. In 1985, SVCC opened the Southside Virginia Education Center.Â The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate degrees. SVCCâ™s Campus Within Walls program provides second chances through higher education to incarcerated students. Through college education, Campus Within Walls provides our students with the tools they need to successfully re-enter society and become productive citizens.Our Campus Within Walls program is an important facet of Southside Virginia Community Collegeâ™s mission. We believe that all citizens should have educational opportunities and that includes incarcerated people in our service region. The goal of this program is to educate college-ready inmates, providing them with the opportunity to attain associateâ™s degrees and certificates while incarcerated. The result of this education is improvement of their chances for successful re-entry into society and the acquisition of meaningful employment.The successful candidates must be committed to our mission to provide quality education to a diverse constituency. The successful candidates must be willing to teach within a correctional setting; some travel will be required with access to a state vehicle or mileage compensation.This is a part-time teaching position in Social Sciences. Classes taught may be day, night and/or weekends and may be seated or hybrid. Classes will be located in one or more of the following correctional centers:Lunenburg Correctional CenterNottoway Correctional CenterBaskerville Correctional CenterVirginia Correctional Center for WomenState Farm Correctional Center*Others may be availablePositions may be available in spring, summer or fall semester. Adjunct faculty are employed to teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semester and up to 8 credit hours for the summer session. Teaching load is based upon student enrollment and staffing needs.
Masterâ™s degree in Social Sciences (Sociology, Psychology) required or a Masterâ™s degree in any teaching field and at least 18 (eighteen) credit hours of post graduate study in Social Sciences.Valid driverâ™s license and good driving recordAdept knowledge of instructional technologiesExcellent interpersonal and native or near-native oral and written English skillsAbility to interact in a professional manner with staff, students, internal and external constituenciesAbility to meet college deadlinesMust pass Virginia Department of Corrections background screeningMeet course deadlines and submit required reporting (including grades) on timeMust adhere to the Transfer Virginia and VCCS student learning outcomesAbility to design and execute effective teaching strategies in a setting without internet accessRegular attendance as determined by the site/course schedule
