Responsibilities
The Head-Royce Lower School is seeking a dynamic, creative educator to join our Kindergarten team. Homeroom Teachers deliver content and skills in three subject areas: language arts, math and social studies. In addition, teachers use the Responsive Classroom approach, Toolbox and our school’s mission to support social-emotional and character growth. We also rely on Learning for Justice: Critical Practices framework and Culturally Responsive teaching applications to create a clear scope and sequence with our diversity, equity and inclusion work. Our educational philosophy focuses on preparing students for the skills necessary to succeed as global citizens in the 21st century. Our faculty create classrooms that encourage students to participate in experiential learning, take risks, view the world through multiple lenses, utilize innovative tools, and demonstrate proficiencies through a range of assessments that include real world problems and performances. Beyond the classroom, teachers are expected to take on Lower-School-wide duties and participate in the life of the community.
Specific Lower School Job Responsibilities/Expectations
- Teach content and skills for a contained classroom of about 20 students, in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Math.
- Meet students where they are by Incorporating project based learning, educational technology, differentiated instruction and cultural competency in lessons.
- Setup and maintain an engaging classroom that draws students and creates an environment that feels safe to all learners and promotes authentic learning.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and staff.
- Foster communication with teachers in order to effectively discuss and support student needs in/out of the classroom, ultimately developing the whole child.
- Plan and conduct field trips for students.
- Deliver a student-centered curriculum with opportunities for choice, real-world problem solving, creativity and intellectual engagement.
- Help develop student opportunities for authentic engagement in their community.
- Help students develop self-awareness and healthy decision-making.
- Foster the development of 21st century skills (Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity) in lessons.
Other Lower School or Departmental Job Responsibilities
- Supervise LS before-school, recess and dismissals, as assigned by the LS Head.
- Attend events (Admissions, All School Fair etc.) that support the wellbeing of our students.
- Actively participate in the life of the community (sporting events, performances, committees).
- Attend full community, divisional, and departmental meetings.

- Clear communicator with students, colleagues and parents, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated success partnering with parents to support the educational needs of their students.

- Demonstrated knowledge of a child’s physical, social and emotional development at this age-level.
- Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills.
- Flexible in pedagogical approach, using multiple modalities to deliver a concept.
- Clear desire to use a variety of teaching approaches in order to reach different student populations and adapt to better serve their learning styles and needs
- Demonstrated understanding of curriculum design, pedagogical approaches and developmental appropriateness in order to deliver engaging, active, student-centered lessons, practice, and assessment
- Familiar with and uses different kinds of assessment (formative and summative)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum 5 years experience teaching at the primary elementary level
- Strong academic background, experience in diversity and inclusion and an awareness of ecological literacy
- Genuine fondness for working with students of this age
- Ability to pass Livescan, TB, and COVID clearance.
- Maintain CPR and First Aid certifications (training provided).
