About the Opportunity
Historical Overview
Mills College @ Northeastern University is home to the Mills College @ Northeastern University Upward Bound Program (MCUB) and will serve approximately 200 students from Oakland and West Contra Costa County this summer. TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and educationally support students from low-income and first-generation college-going backgrounds. The MCUB program provides academic, social/cultural awareness, college prep, career exploration, and financial literacy services to its participants. Our goal is to support students through high school graduation and help them gain access to postsecondary education. The Summer Academic Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects: English, Lab Sciences, and Mathematics. The MCUB Summer Academic Program will also provide workshops exploring various topics including Life Skills, Study Skills, and Time Management.
Summer Academic Program Description
The MCUB Program offers a six-week summer academic program for students entering grades 9th through 12th. The MCUB summer academic program will be conducted at Mills College @ Northeastern University in Oakland, CA. Instruction for the MCUB Summer Academic Program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 12, 2023, and continue through Friday, July 21, 2023.
MCUB Program is currently seeking highly motivated, knowledgeable, creative, engaging, student focused, experienced educators to teach a course in Foundation of English. The Course will be taught to high school students in 9th -12th grades. The positions require someone who has passion, innovation, and knowledge to motivate and challenge students to generate skills necessary for college success. We seek instructors who can develop a strong curriculum that addresses students' needs, interests, abilities, and curiosities in Foundation of English.
Analysis of Modern English structure using the methods of traditional grammar. Topics studied: parts of speech, grammatical functions, phrase, clause, and sentence types, and nominal and verbal categories. Nature and usefulness of prescriptive rules of grammar. How to teach traditional grammar as presented in the secondary English curriculum. Instruction will encourage students to demonstrate critical understanding of traditional grammar, of cemporary syntactic analysis, and of the strengths and weaknesses of those systems in secondary education.
Learning Outcomes
- Perform syntactic analysis on a variety of English sentences to demonstrate their understanding of analysis methods and sentence types.
- Evaluate the significance of syntactic analysis to educators.
- Apply syntactic analysis to enhance their own writing or to decode the writing of other people.
- Recognize the impact of cultural, economic, political, and social environments upon language.
- Appraise diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions, and social roles.
- Explain the effects of the history of English on its syntactic structure.
- Explain the impact that conventions of grammatical description have had on educational presentations of English grammar.
- Explain the concept of English grammars and why they are plural and not singular.
- Explain basic concepts in morphology and syntax.
Each course will be defined by:
- Small classes (10-20 students)
- Daily in-class instruction - Monday - Thursday -10:30 am - 11:25 am (June 12th - July 21st)
- End of Summer Showcase: An opportunity for all students to show what they learned during the summer. (July 20th, 5pm-8pm)
- Instructors are given 12 off-site prep hour.
Staff Training:
- Staff MUST be available for staff training.
- June 5th 10:30 am - 4pm
- Must Complete Mandated Reporting training by June 5th, 2023 (https://www.mandatedreporterca.com/)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with the Program Director in developing & selecting course content.
- Develop a teaching-learning plan, consistent with arts performance standards & expectations.
- Provide individualized and small group instruction.
- Establish classroom management policies and procedures needed to maintain a productive classroom environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, MCUB program mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
- Attend the staff training, program activities, & final teacher evaluation closing session. Dates to be announced prior to hiring.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree highly preferred or equivalent experience in teaching at a university or secondary level. (Thorough knowledge of subject matter and skill acquisition in subject being taught)
- Must demonstrate proficiency in a related field.
- Inspirational, culturally aware with demonstrated knowledge and experience in problems facing low-income and first-generation students
- Knowledge of child/adolescent development and different learning styles
- Must be able to effectively work with students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds
