Description
Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for an Animal and Plant Technician. The technician's primary responsibility is to provide care and maintenance of animals and plants used for teaching and research in the Biology Department, with additional animal support in other science programs as needed. Duties include carrying out standard operating procedures for the care of animals and plants, overseeing operations of vivarium and greenhouse spaces, ensuring regulations are followed for animal protocols, maintaining records for all animal and plant use, providing administrative support to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, assisting with the setup and operation of classroom activities and research, assisting with the maintenance of laboratory equipment and stockroom, and managing additional department-related functions as assigned. The technician will also supervise student employees in the Biology Department. Essential Responsibilities:
This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the academic year, with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours' time period.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in biology or related areas OR High school diploma or GED with at least three years of experience related to the job description
Ability to carry out standard operating procedures for the care of animals and plants and use of standard laboratory equipment
Excellent time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills to manage multiple ongoing projects without constant oversight
Excellent ability to communicate with faculty, students, administrators, and regulatory authorities involved in animal and plant use
Enthusiasm for the care and well-being of research animals and plants and contributing to educational and research objectives
Ability to conduct strenuous physical activity, including lifting, pushing, or pulling objects up to 50 lbs
Experience with animal and plant care for teaching and research in a college or university setting is preferred by not required
