Job Summary Overview:
The Department of History, Philosophy and the Social Sciences (HPSS) at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) invites applications for a full time, two-year term appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Residence in Asian and/or Asian Diaspora Studies, starting in Fall of 2023.
RISD recognizes principles of social equity, diversity, and inclusion as fundamental to its academic mission as an art and design school. We understand these principles to require ongoing attention to differential embodied experience and expansion of the forms of knowledge from which our curricula originate. RISD is engaged in the collective work of institutional transformation and would value applicants whose pedagogical and professional experiences have prepared them to foster equitable teaching and learning environments. We seek applicants whose teaching and professional work (creative practice and/or academic scholarship) attends to embodied difference as intersectional and centers on bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities. We encourage applicants from traditionally underrepresented communities including Native American peoples, Black and Indigenous peoples of color, Latinx, people who identify as LGBTQIA+, veterans, and persons with disabilities.
We are seeking a teacher/scholar whose work speaks to Asian and/or Asian diaspora studies, and an interest in how the work of artists and designers intersects with the histories, politics, philosophies, and cultures of Asian peoples broadly conceived. The ideal candidate would have speciality in Asian studies and the study of religion, geography, sociology, philosophy, ethnic studies, gender studies, or media studies, or in any other field related to Asian studies. We would welcome a colleague whose work engages with the complexity of Asia and/or the Asian diaspora today. A full-time teaching load at RISD is six courses per year. All candidates should demonstrate quality teaching and have the ability to contribute to our undergraduate concentration in History, Philosophy, and the Social Sciences.
Job Qualifications Required:
- Ph.D., with demonstrated expertise in Asian and/or Asian diaspora studies, in a field in the humanities or social sciences or in an interdisciplinary degree, with the degree conferred by July 1st, 2023.
- Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduates
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching
- Expressed interest in teaching undergraduate art and design students
